Tripwire Interactive has today announced Killing Floor, a massively enhanced retail release of a mod originally made available for free in 2005 for Unreal Tournament 2004. Alex Quick, the mod's lead developer, approached Tripwire about porting Killing Floor over to Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, the winner of Epic Games' original Make Something Unreal competition, and one of the most successful independently developed titles to be released through Steam. Tripwire countered, offering instead to purchase Killing Floor, and to help a group of the original developers release it as a highly polished, upgraded retail product.

Primarily, Killing Floor is a first-person, co-op, mutated-clone, survival horror game set in the United Kingdom. Players must withstand waves of attacks, using accrued points to purchase new weapons from each map's vendor, who could be some distance from the best survival spot. The story for the original mod is as follows:
In a laboratory under the city, a series of human experiments in cloning and biological augmentation are being conducted by the employees of "Horizon". Horizon is a BioTech corporation formerly employed by the government to do the R&D on a top secret series of synthetic combat drugs which would enhance the effectiveness of soldiers in the field. Horizon's funding was cut, when their practices were deemed too immoral even for such a controversial project, but the research didn't stop. Funded by private money from the deep pockets of Horizon chairman and research scientist Kevin Clalemay, tests continued in a more...private location.
That was until something went wrong. There were reports that the lab had been comprimised; that the subjects were behaving abnormally...then, silence.
Several days later, twisted shapes began to emerge from the confines of the lab into the city above.
Killing Floor will be released through Steam in the not too distant future, at a low, recession-friendly price point. For further details, stay tuned - Killing Floor is a wonderful game that a lot of people will greatly enjoy.

massively enhanced retail release of a mod originally made available for free in 2005 for Unreal Tournament 2004
