[PC] Zeno Clash

A tua motherboard suporta PCI Express?

Recomendo.

@Impersonator

Zeno Clash Pre-release Hands-on:

We played nearly finished build of Zeno Clash and it looks like the future of games could be in the hands of independent studios. While mega-corporations are safely investing in iterations of well established IPs, independent developers have courage and freedom to bring new ideas to the table. And that's the case with Zeno Clash, a punk-fantasy fighting game from the small Chilean studio ACE Team.

The two most prominent features of Zeno Clash are the award-winning surreal art style and the combo-based first-person melee combat system. While the later could sound familiar to the fans of Condemned series by Monolith Games, ACE Team took the fight system to a new level by making it more complex and intense. But this complexity isn't overwhelming thankfully to the good game design. You learn new skills gradually either in 'otherworld arenas' that are blended with the main storyline, or from on-screen instructions. More importantly, the game is forcing the player to use all available techniques in order to survive. What surprises me is that ACE Team managed to 'squeeze in' all these combos into just few keys, Mouse 1 & 2 buttons and, most importantly, the right timing. For instance, to perform a deflect-kick combo, you have to block (key Spacebar) a punch exactly before it lands and press Mouse 1 immediately to execute a powerful finisher kick. Mind you, that gets more complicated when you're surrounded by multiple enemies that not only furiously fight, but shoot at you as well.

Please note, that Zeno Clash trailers don't do justice to the combat scenes- these are much more frantic and adrenaline-pumping than it may seem from videos. The enemies don't just wait while you're fighting with one of them, but instead they are trying to get to you and, if your back is open, they kick your ass for good. Often your adversaries are supported by waves of fast animals and you'll have to get rid of them before continuing your fight against the main opponents. Add to that ranged and melee weapons that could be knocked out of hands and picked up either by you or by your enemies and you'll start getting a picture of the combat dynamics.

Ranged weapons are also present and they are as artistically unique as the rest of the game. I personally don't remember such things as fish-shaped guns or skull grenades in any other game. Reloading animations are of the same level creative- it's obvious that ACE Team paid close attention to such details. The interesting and very welcome solution was not to limit ammunition, so instead of searching for ammo you keep your focus on the combat itself. But don't think it makes the gameplay much more easier, because the reload times are slower than usual and the ammo capacities are balanced too.

But the art style is what sells Zeno Clash in the first place. The visuals are awe-inspiring and absolutely unforgettable. Honestly, one third of my gaming time I spent just taking screenshots (key F5). The surreal designs seem to be ranging from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to hellish paintings of Hieronymus Bosch and while the story details are quite mean, visually the game isn't depressing at all. The attention to details is also remarkable and that helps for immersion into the crazy world of Zeno Clash. So it comes as little surprise that the game has bean already awarded 'Editor's Choice: Best Upcoming Indie' at ModDB's 2008 awards and nominated in 'Excellence in Visual Art' at the Independent Games Festival. (Click here to read the interview with the game designer Andres Bordeu about his sources of inspiration for this game).

All in all, Zeno Clash looks like a surprisingly refreshing game. Art lovers will forget to fight for a detailed look at the designs, meanwhile the experienced gamers will appreciate the complex combat system and the furious encounters, especially. The weird and gruesome single player story looks very intriguing so far, and after that there're Challenge Mode and Steam Achievements. Stay tuned for the full review!
