Project CARS 2 Adds Indy Speedway and Three Historic Oval Racers

The Indy 500 is nearly upon us. To celebrate, Slightly Mad Studios has announced the latest batch of content set for inclusion in this year’s Project CARS 2.

Naturally, this means Indianapolis Motor Speedway is confirmed for the game. The first track of its kind, the historic 2.5-mile circuit will play host to not only the Dallara DW12 that returns from the first game, but also three historic oval racers.

Up first is Parnelli Jones’ 1963 Indy 500 winner, affectionately known as “Ol’ Calhoun”. This is one of the last of the front-engined roadsters to win at the Brickyard, and the battle was a fierce one. While the venerable Offenhauser four-cylinder engine held the power advantage, Ol’ Calhoun required three pit stops to the one needed for the dainty rear-engined Lotus 29 of Jim Clark.

The Watson-based roadster had let Jones down before. With only a handful of laps remaining, the car gave up the previous year. But Jones persisted, and held the lead as he finished his last pit stop. With seven laps to go, Ol’ Calhoun began dumping oil on the track. Two laps before the finish, the black flag was thrown. Team owner J.C. Agajanian and Lotus head Colin Chapman had it out with the chief steward, who in the end sided with the American team, handing the win to Jones.

It was a controversial finish. Not one to back down from a challenge, Jim Clark returned in 1965 with another rear-engined car, the Lotus 38. It utterly dominated, leading 197 of the 200 laps, and helped kick off the popularity of a layout that persists to today.

Both the ’63 and ’65 Indy 500 winners will join the ranks of Project CARS 2. In addition, the game will include a third Brickyard contender, though it doesn’t boast the pedigree of the others. However, the Chapman-Granatelli STP Lotus 56 is certainly a unique proposition: a twin-turbine, four-wheel-drive orange wedge of speed.

Both Jones and Clark tested the 56 in the run up to the 1968 season. Sadly, Clark was killed in an accident at Hockenheim before the Indy 500 took place.

Sim racers can look forward to getting behind the digital wheels of each of these historic machines when Project CARS 2 lands late 2017.

Entire 2016 IndyCar Lineup Confirmed for Project CARS 2

As the Indy 500 race gets underway, Slightly Mad Studios has confirmed the full 2016 IndyCar lineup is coming to Project CARS 2.

The announcement comes days after news that a handful of classic Indy 500 machinery will also be part of the PCARS2 experience. In addition to Indy Motor Speedway, the game will feature all of last year’s teams, drivers, and cars. This includes both Honda and Chevrolet aero kits, for speedways and road courses alike.

In the quest for realism, SMS employed Honda driver James Hinchcliffe. Encouragingly, Hinchcliffe found the digital Dallaras fairly accurate out of the box. “There were some little balance discrepancies from the real thing,” he recalls, “just sort of how it reacts on some of the high-speed stuff, how it reacts with some of the low-speed stuff.”

With the 2016 IndyCar season confirmed, the big question is how much of the calendar will be represented. Long Beach and Indianapolis are in, and the original game featured Watkins Glen, Road America, and Sonoma. Provided those all return, and so long as Indy also includes the road course, PCARS2 so far features six of the 16 races in the 2016 season.

Controversially, Indianapolis was originally ear-marked for the first game. While a Dallara DW12 did eventually arrive via DLC, dedicated oval racing remained absent. It appears the discipline will get its fair share of the limelight in the sequel.

Road and Race Versions of Ford GT Confirmed for Project CARS 2

Slightly Mad Studios has revealed the latest additions to the Project CARS 2 car list. It’s a two-for-one deal this week, starring the road and race versions of Ford’s reborn GT.

After 14 months of secretive development, the American automaker revealed its latest supercar to the world at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. At the rear of the Ford GT sits a 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 — the same engine used in the 2017 F-150. This EcoBoost pushes the 3,000 lbs supercar with 647 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque. With a top speed of 216 mph, anyone can see why this machine is worthy of inclusion to PCARS 2.

As stated above, the race version of the vehicle will also be making it’s way to the game. In honor of the 50th anniversary of Ford’s at Le Mans in 1966, the Blue Oval prepared the race version of the GT for showtime. The road to Le Mans wasn’t a smooth ride, though.

The race version’s debut at the 2016 Daytona 24 Hours couldn’t be considered a success with it’s 31st place finish. Following that initial loss was a set of upsets at the next two rounds of the 2016 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Round four is where things started to look up for the Ford Chip Ganassi team thanks to a win at Leguna Seca.

One month later, it was time to put the GT LM to the test. At Le Mans, the Fords took pole, second, fourth, and fifth during qualifying. With the race underway, Joey Hand grabbed the lead with four hours to go and kept it. At the end, the Ford GT crossed the line, finishing first in the GTLM class with some controversy. Still, it was a win for the Ford Motor Company.

Players can get their own taste of victory once Project CARS 2 drops at the end of this year. If you’re looking for more talk about the evolving car list of the game, head to this forum thread.

Project CARS 2 Could Arrive September 22, Will Include 11 Porsches Day One

Well, this is a surprise. It seems Slightly Mad Studios’ Project CARS 2 will release September 22 on PS4, Xbox One and PC as per a new blog post on the official website. The date has since been removed from the article, but multiple responses on social media and within our own community corroborate the date.

The reveal comes from a post detailing the 11 Porsche models that will be included on-disc for release. The German manufacturer will have representation in the past and present, bringing road and motorsport icons. Fan favorites like the 918 Spyder and 962C will feature in the title. The full list is as follows:

  • Porsche 911 GT1-98
  • Porsche 911 GT3 R (991)
  • Porsche 911 GT3 R Endurance (991)
  • Porsche 911 GT3 RS
  • Porsche 918 Spyder
  • Porsche 935/77
  • Porsche 935/80
  • Porsche 936 Spyder
  • Porsche 962C
  • Porsche 962C Langheck
  • Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport
The list is certainly mouth-watering. Since EA’s clutches on the German manufacturer have loosened, we’ve seen Porsche pop up in Gran Turismo Sport, Assetto Corsa and iRacing. Slightly Mad Studios’ selection certainly makes keen use of the license.

Slightly Mad Studios kept the best piece of news till last however, with a throwaway line at the end of the post revealing PCARS 2‘s release date. Earlier than a lot of people expected, you’ll be able to play Project CARS 2 on September 22. This release date reportedly applies to all versions of the game so both console and PC players can rejoice. With the heavily rumored Forza Motorsport 7 and GT Sport coming in the latter half of this year, could we be seeing a blockbuster last quarter of 2017?

Recent trailers for the game have only specified the game would be coming late 2017 but those with good memories will remember that Ian Bell did say the team were aiming for a “Septemberish” release window on the official Project CARS forum. The comment was made in January and if this release date is accurate, that is quite the prediction from Bell.

With the cat seemingly let out the bag, we’ll be paying attention to Project CARS 2‘s social media channels for a potential new trailer. E3 is right around the corner and it would be perfect timing to formally unveil the release date.
