The only thing official we can glean so far is that
Japan will be getting the new PSP Store next week. That as much was revealed in a press release -
one which we've already covered earlier.
Now as we make our way into the core of
TGS 2008 - as well as all the insanity that goes with it - some conflicting evidences from different sources report that we'll be getting quite a big bunch of system updates from
Sony next week: PSP FW 5.0 and PS3 FW 2.5.
Why does this seem likely? Depends on which school of thought you follow...
On PSP FW 5.00: Based on the announcement that the PSP Store will be launched next week, it would follow that the PSP might need a new firmware.
PSP Fanboy reports it so. Also, based on previous reports, it seems that
PSP FW 5.00 will include PSN access. And then there's
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite's "Ad-hoc party" and Resistance's "Infect mode" PSP-PS3 features too.
On PS3 FW 2.50: No features for this update have been revealed (yet). However, as
Exophase points out, we know that the bluetooth
headset will be rolling out next week. And chances are, it might need some system modification to make the PS3 compatible with the new peripheral. More so, I also remember hearing a PlayStation Home manager dropping a clue about FW 2.50 as well -
he mentioned October.
Now no matter which school of thought you'd buy into, the fact remains: both the PSP and PS3 have huge things coming for them. And as some of you may know through experience, huge changes come with
firmware updates. That much we can surely expect in the near future. As for the "when" and "what features will they bring" parts... well, that's the rumor bit.
TGS isn't over yet. We may hear some concrete info from Sony soon enough.
