[PSP] Firmware 5.00

Video game developers always get their hands on new firmware versions before the public, so that they can make sure their games support the newest features. A leak in an unnamed French development studio today has confirmed the existence of official firmware version 5.0 for the PSP. There was little doubt that such an update was coming, since Sony is constantly tweaking their firmware to help prevent piracy and add more features. Now we have a clearer picture of what will be included in the upcoming update:

-Support for the PSN store. We already knew that this was in the works, following an earlier announcement from Sony. However, French sources suggest that this feature will not necessarily include support for wireless connection to the Playstation Store. It may instead offer access to online friends lists from within certain games, as well as (*gasp*) trophy support.

-RSS improvements. Sony is planning to un-gimp the current RSS reader functionality to allow it to read text files.

-Integrated Screenshot Capture. This system will allow players to take screenshots from games and save them to memory stick.

Right now there is no official word on a release date. No doubt, Sony would like to have their latest firmware ready to ship with the upcoming PSP-3000 model, but it appears as if complexities related to the PSN functionality might delay its public release.

Who said it was fake? Watch PSP FW 5.0 in action

Ah yes, more proof for the unconvinced! With an initial report on Sony releasing PSP FW 5.0 and a follow-up story on its new features (PSN access, screenshot functionality, new RSS feeder), PSP-Gen has revealed two videos of the new firmware in action.

The first vid is just a quickie - a teaser, if you will. It shows the installation of the PSP FW 5.0 eboot. Basically they get to "update" to the Testing Tool version (i.e. beta) of this new firmware.

The second video is the meatier one. It's about five minutes long, and takes us for a tour around the XMB. Yeah the voice over is in French, but if you've read our previous coverage (which you should have already by this time, mind you!) then you'd know what's going on.
Video 1 e 2

Rumor: PSP FW 5.0, PS3 FW 2.5 go live next week?

The only thing official we can glean so far is that Japan will be getting the new PSP Store next week. That as much was revealed in a press release - one which we've already covered earlier.

Now as we make our way into the core of TGS 2008 - as well as all the insanity that goes with it - some conflicting evidences from different sources report that we'll be getting quite a big bunch of system updates from Sony next week: PSP FW 5.0 and PS3 FW 2.5.

Why does this seem likely? Depends on which school of thought you follow...

On PSP FW 5.00: Based on the announcement that the PSP Store will be launched next week, it would follow that the PSP might need a new firmware. PSP Fanboy reports it so. Also, based on previous reports, it seems that PSP FW 5.00 will include PSN access. And then there's Monster Hunter Freedom Unite's "Ad-hoc party" and Resistance's "Infect mode" PSP-PS3 features too.

On PS3 FW 2.50: No features for this update have been revealed (yet). However, as Exophase points out, we know that the bluetooth headset will be rolling out next week. And chances are, it might need some system modification to make the PS3 compatible with the new peripheral. More so, I also remember hearing a PlayStation Home manager dropping a clue about FW 2.50 as well - he mentioned October.

Now no matter which school of thought you'd buy into, the fact remains: both the PSP and PS3 have huge things coming for them. And as some of you may know through experience, huge changes come with firmware updates. That much we can surely expect in the near future. As for the "when" and "what features will they bring" parts... well, that's the rumor bit.

TGS isn't over yet. We may hear some concrete info from Sony soon enough.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has confirmed that the direct PSP store will officially launch on October 15, alongside the release of a new system software update: firmware 5.0. The update adds an XMB icon that allows users to access the PlayStation Store straight from their PSP.
Following the launch of the 5.0 firmware, Sony will begin offering select UMD based titles as digital downloads on the same day as their retail release date. A list of confirmed titles can be found below, along with release dates:

* Yuusha no Kuze ni Namaikida or2 (10/16)
* Bleach Soul Carnival (10/23)
* Secret Agent Clank (11/20)
* Patapon 2 (11/27)
* LocoRoco 2 (12/4)
* Diamond Gunshot (Spring 2009)
* Resistance Retribution (Spring 2009)

Tambem se pode postar este info apesar que não é bem relacionado com firmware

- The Ad-hoc Party service is listed as a BETA when it starts on Oct 30. It will not be a firmware update, but a seperate application you download from PSN.

- The only game that will be supported at launch is MHP2 (lololol), and Phantasy Star Portable is planned to be supported shortly after. They will announce "more titles" later on, and it's stated clearly that they will be in no way supporting ALL ad-hoc multiplayer games with the service. lolz

- The application will have it's own lobbies and rooms for matchmaking and support standard PS3 chat features. Those who bought an early 20gig PS3 are not welcome to this Ad-hoc party because it doesn't support wireless. Too bad. Lolz.

Já é oficial:

Sony confirms features for PSP FW 5.00, PS3 FW 2.50

Man, I haven't even brewed my first cup of coffee yet and here we already are with some piping hot news to start the week! We just got word from PSN director Eric Lempel via the PlayStation Blogs, and he's listed the features we can all expect in the upcoming system firmware updates for the PSP and PS3.

Rumored lists and other speculation have been around for the past couple of days now, and finally we get some solid evidence of what the system updates will carry.

PSP Firmware 5.00:

  • Direct PSN access. Yep, the PSP finally gets its native PlayStation Store. With FW 5.00 you can access Sony's online network directly from your PSP via Wi-Fi - you can register a PSN account (if you haven't yet - SHAME!) or manage your profile and settings. This also means direct download of games, media, and content from the store - no need for the PC Store anymore! Just a note, the same wallet and account can be used interchangeably for the PSP and PS3; there's no need to create a new account for the PSP Store. Just so you don't get surprised, the PC Store will be under maintenance while they get the PSP Store online.
  • Sleep timer option. Some of you have probably seen this many times before as a feature in some of the more ubiquitous music player homebrew projects in the community, but now, Sony's building it into the system already: the feature allows you to play music and set a sleep timer.
  • Full screen keyboard option for text input. Self explanatory.
  • Redesigned XMB background. 'Nuf said. (Wonder what it looks like though - they didn't show any screenshots...)

Eric Lempel notes that this is not the full list of features. A more detailed list (i.e. changelog) will be published once the updates have gone live. Unfortunately, no launch dates for North America have been scheduled for these system updates yet.

Cumps.
