Japanese speaking gamers were treated to a surprise in this month's Famitsu magazine, released two days ago. As well as a full spread with details on the upcoming Loco Roco 2, fans were greeted with the news that Sony has a sequel to Patapon in the works as well.

Like the first installment, this game is being developed by Pyramid and produced by Japan Studios, the same company responsible for the Loco Roco series.

We are thrilled to hear that two of our favorite PSP titles will be getting a re-vamp on the PSP. We will have more juicy details for you, including screenshots and release dates, as soon as they are available.

Gostei bastante do jogo, mas fiquei lixado que repetir os mapas da caça centenas de vezes é uma m*rda... come-me a cabeça repetir coisas centenas de vezes.

More Patapon 2 details: multiplayer for up to four players in the bag

Good things are definitely coming our way from Sony Computer Entertainment. As we all know, we're going to get sequels for the two highly-acclaimed PSP games: LocoRoco and Patapon. We have already reported on some of the new features that will make it into LocoRoco 2, but what about Patapon 2? Here's good news: multiplayer is confirmed for Patapon 2.

Multiplayer for a Patapon game? Why didn't the developers think of it in the first place? Hiroyuki Kotani, designer for Patapon, revealed that they decided that enabling multiplayer on the first game would probably overwhelm players due to the sheer number of the Patapons that they can control. "You wouldn't have any idea which fighters were under your control," said Kotani.

That problem is well taken care of in Patapon 2, however, with the introduction of the Hero Patapon. The Hero Patapons are the main unit in a player's Patapon army, which can use the special items that can be earned during multiplayer.

Speaking of multiplayer, here's how that game element comes in: in every single-player sortie, players may encounter giant eggs, which hold special items or even smaller eggs. To crack them open, players would have to get the help of three other people playing the game in order to push the egg forward while at the same time defending it from threats. Once the egg is placed in the egg-hatching altar, all four players will have to perform the hatching ceremony in perfect rhythm.

Of course, a new game means a new roster of enemies and bosses as well. Adds Kotani:

We've got about double the amount of content to explore, just in terms of the number of stages alone. Add the customization options to that, and to be honest, you may never get to fully explore every bit of it.

Patapon 2: story, multiplayer modes, new game plus, eggs, heroes, and Pata-screens galore

Sweet mother of pearl! Patapon 2 screens are marching in, with an accompanying rhythm band to drum some details to life. SCEJ is totally upping the ante with this sequel. Just to give you a sampling, Patapon 2 will be getting twice the amount of levels, units, and items, as well as a couple of new features to make every Pata-fan squirm in anticipation.

Asking for numbers? Then numbers we shall have! Check out the 411 for Patapon 2: 60 levels, 384 items, 22 characters, 7 minigames, and an average playtime of 20 hours. In the first game, we only had 37 levels, 187 items, 11 characters, 5 minigames, and an average of 10 hours of playtime.

On with the details!

  • Over land, over sea...Patapon 2's story begins almost immediately where the first game left off. After the Zigaton threat was dealt with, the tribe built a ship to cross the sea. However, judging from the screens (screen on top, first row below), it looks like everything isn't smooth sailing for the pata-tribe.
  • Putting all your eggs in a basket. A new feature in Patapon 2 is Egg collecting. These are 30 types of eggs that you can obtain through the single-player campaigns, with varrying levels of rarity. These can be used in the multiplayer mode...
  • Using your eggs. In the multiplayer arena, there are two modes: Mission and Carnival (third-fourth row of pics below). Mission takes you and your buddies for some co-op play, and your goal is to move the egg to a specific spot. This in turn brings you to Carnival mode, where you get to jam to some pata-beats that show up on the screen.
  • The cast gets bigger. New units introduced in this sequel come in different flavors: in the fifth row of pics, we see the Flier unit, the Mage, and the Robot. Another new unit in Patapon 2 is the hero - this little powerhouse can unleash a special attack (a la Limit Break) when you enter Hero Mode. See first pic, third row.
  • From Zero to Hero. So what is Hero Mode, you ask? This is triggered right after Fever Mode (which is easier to enter this time around, btw). Heroes can also be customized with different armors, abilities, and jobs (demonstrated in last pic).
  • New game plus!...ish. Don't go deleting your save file from Patapon 1 just yet! That same save file can be used in Patapon 2. Doing so allows you to carry over certain special items, medals, and gold.

Parece-me muito porreiro. A única coisa que não gostei no primeiro foi que o modo principal era um pouco curto, mas se quisermos derrotar todos os bosses, aí sim o jogo demora bastante tempo a ser completado.

Cumps.

TGS 2008: First look at Patapon 2 multiplayer mode

The Tokyo Game Show is looking up, and it hasn't even started yet! At the event's pre-show session, Sony showed off new vids of Patapon 2, showcasing the game's new multiplayer mode in action.

As was explained before, multiplayer mode now involves cooperative beat-tapping to fight enemies and to hatch giant eggs. Multiplayer will support up to four players, who each have their own Patapon warrior to lead to battle. Don't worry if the giant ostrich pecks you to death though. As long as one warrior stays alive, the others will eventually be resurrected.

The game's looking as fun as ever, and stays true to the spirit of the first game. In fact, it looks identical. I'm hoping to see more once TGS officially starts. Don't know how many hours I lost to the first game, but I'm sure I'll lose much more when the sequel's out.

TGS 2008: Patapon 2 Japanese Trailer 2

Yes, the cyclopic warriors are back once again. While they're still one-eyed and still on the search for that mysterious "It", there are a lot of new stuff to be had in Patapon 2.

Here's another video for the game, just in case you didn't get enough of the four demo videos released by Sony yesterday at the TGS 2008. The new monsters are looking might monstrous, with long, spindly legs and huge, ostrich-like creatures. Be careful not to let it knock you out.

The enemy fortresses are looking even more evil, too. But not to worry, as long as you still got your groove on, you'll do fine. Surge ahead, Mighty Patapons!

Japan gets Patapon 2 demo tomorrow, more screens

Though Europe might be lucky to get earlier LocoRoco 2 than the rest of the entire world, Japan still gets a special treat ahead of everyone else too: a demo for Patapon 2.

Tomorrow's PlayStation Network update for Japan will include a downloadable demo for the action-adventure rhythm title. Coupled with this announcement, SCEJ has also confirmed that China will get their own localization of Patapon 2, to be released in January.

For now, we get some screens. Still the same thing going on in this batch: broken ships, eggs, and eyeballs.
