Vejam só a opinião deste fulano acerca do QUAKE 3 e praticamente todos os jogos em geral ...sim pois apesar de ele focar mais o jogo da id ele deixa bem claro que o que ele diz sobre o Quake também se aplica a outros jogos.
Doom III: Who cares?
I realize this may be a touchy subject given the nature of this site, but I figured what better way to get my point across than to jump right into the frying pan? Understand that I feel quite strongly about this, and will be speaking rather harshly about it. Please don't be offended. Just listen with an open mind.
Basically, Doom III makes me wanna puke. Just when I thought I'd seen enough of this crap, id pulls out another one. Whoopie.
I don't understand what the hell is wrong with the industry today. Innovation has been completely stifled by visual distractions and euphoric hypnosis induced by colorful facades and fancy "eye candy" (oh the cliche). Let's take a close look at the oh so brilliant id software for a second. What they've done with graphics technology the past few years is nothing short of amazing. They're pushing the industry way beyond its boundaries and graphics companies such as Nvidia are profiting like crazy off of the hype.
But wait a minute. id software isn't a graphics company. They're a GAME company. Has anyone forgotten this? They're supposed to be producing GAMES, not techonology demos (which is about all that Doom III is good for). When was the last time id software did ANYTHING innovative with gameplay?
Well, there was Wolfenstein.....
.....yup, that's about it.
Just take a look at what followed. Doom, Quake, Quake II, Quake III. It doesn't take a genius to realize that Quake III is nothing more than Quake II with better graphics, which is nothing more than Quake with better graphics, which is nothing more than Doom with better graphics and some ridiculously minor changes in gameplay physics. id software is consistently recycling the same idea over and over and over again....and people HAIL them for it! I just don't get it.
It's not just id software, either. This sort of bland redundancy is happening all over the industry. In fact, Blizzard followed the exact same pattern. Warcraft, Starcraft, Warcraft, Starcraft. Dear God, ENOUGH already. It's getting to the point where your only choice of game as a PC gamer is a first-person shooter or a real-time strategy. It's absolutely ludicrous.
I blame gamers. If people continue to buy crap, companies will continue to produce crap. Gamers are being completely suckered into buying 1993 games with 2002 graphics. People need to wake up and realize that graphics today are nothing more than an illusion used to mask purely mediocre gameplay. We need to dig down into our roots and once again understand the reason we play games in the first place. It has NOTHING to do with graphics.
I can demonstrate this perfectly to anyone over twenty years of age who was around during the birth of the industry. I used to have a BLAST with my old Atari collection. It didn't take graphical realism to convince me to spend hours in front of a TV screen. All you needed were a few black and white pixels and you were hooked. And you had to play as many of these games as you could get your hands on. Why? Because every game was different. Every game was a revolution and an innovation. Pong was nothing like Joust was nothing like Tempest was nothing like Missile Command was nothing like Space Invaders, and so on and so forth. The list is endless.
Good luck finding that sort of pattern today. There are only a small handful of companies that even DARE to innovate anymore, even in the console market. Corporate profits have completely overriden the innovative style of classic game developers. Hooray for capitalism.
Thus, the only hope for games exists in the buying power of gamers. But what's the point? People won't stop buying just pure eye candy. They won't stop because they no longer have any clue what they're missing. It's really sad. I hope that one day people will understand once again the true value of gaming. Until then, I'll stick with the classics. Enjoy Doom III. I know I won't.
