ASUS P5B Deluxe Quad Core & CrossFire Test

Today we will be taking a look at how the Asus P5B Deluxe fare with The highest end CPUs available in the market today, the Q6700 and X6800. At the same time, we'll take a look at Gigabyte's unreleased Gigabyte 975X-DS5, comparing ATI Crossfire performance between the two boards at the same time.

The Asus P5B Deluxe is based on the Intel 965P chipset, and is one of the more overclockable board of this chipset around. It has since been superceeded by the Asus Commando 965P mainboard that we reviewed a few days ago. Before we continue, let's take a look at specifications of the mainboard.

>>Benchmarking Setup

>>Results

>>File Compression Test

We made use of WinRAR's inbuilt compression benchmark to compare between the two processors, and the QX6700 is a good 25% faster due to it's superior L2 cache. WinRAR makes use of the multi threads on the Q6700 as you can see from the CPU Usage graphs.

>>Game Tests

In this COH test, the X6800 came up tops as it has a higher clockspeed as compared to the Q6700. COH doesnt exactly make use of the multi threads available on the Q6700 as shown.

Half Life 2 Episode 1 is generally single threaded and the X6800 wins with a higher clockspeed once again.

>>Content Creation Tests

In Pinnacle Studio 10, the multi threaded monsters are put to test again. Once again the Q6700 came out tops with its quad cores.

Photoshop is obviously quite capable at multi threading as you can see from the results and the CPU Usage graphs.

Lightwave 9 is able to make use of the QX6700's 4 threads fully.

We can savely sum it up from 3D Studio Max 8 that the Q6700 is evidently much more capable for Content Creation as compared to the X6800.

>>Video Encoding Tests

Apple Quicktime encoding is able to make use of all the 4 cores present in the Q6700 but isn't able to fully exploit the powress of the chip. Encoding with the Q6700 is still twice as fast compared to the X6800.

Mainconcept H.264 decoder is unable to exploit all the 4 threads fully although the Q6700 is slightly faster in encoding as compared to the X6800.

Windows Media Encoder 9 does it's job relatively well in making use of processors with multi core, and is quite a bit faster when you use Q6700 as compared to X6800.

>>Audio Encoding Tests

iTunes as shown in the benchmark above is only able to make use of 2 threads, thus X6800 reigns with a superior clockspeed.

Lame 3.97 is almost not multi-thread enabled at all.

>>Overclocking Tests

Highest FSB clock at 465Mhz with the C2Q

Highest 3DMark score with [email protected]

Some synthetic tests with an OC Q6700.

Crossfire Test Results

Conclusion

After all the tests that we have done, we can safely conclude that users who needs to access content creation and video encoding software often should spend a couple of hundreds more to get a Quad Core processor, wheras the gamers should go for the highest clockspeeds available.

Apart from the processor tests, we have to sayit is not viable to get a 965 platform for crossfire purposes, as the results have shown that the 975X fares much better than the 965P platform.
