iOS 15 is rumored to revamp notifications, iPadOS 15 to change the home screen

Apple is holding its annual developer conference starting on June 7, and it's there where the company is expected to unveil the next iterations of its mobile operating systems: iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. The changes to these are always presented in early summer so that developers have time to update their apps until the new iteration officially drops alongside new iPhones in the fall.

With iOS 15, Apple is rumored to debut a new feature that will allow you to set different notification preferences depending on your current status, and update said status easily from the lock screen or the control center. Presumably you would also be able to use Siri to quickly change your status. Such a status could be "driving", "working", "sleeping", or a custom category of your choosing.

For every status, you can pick how you want your device to notify you of things (or whether it should at all), choosing for example if your phone would make a sound or not, that type of thing. There will also be an option to set automatic replies to messages depending on your current status. This will be an improvement to the auto-reply feature which only works while you're driving.

There are also some upgrades coming to iMessage at some point in the future to make it more like a social network and allow it to compete better with WhatsApp, although these haven't been detailed and they may be delayed and not make the cut to iOS 15.

As for iPadOS 15, this should have support for home screen widgets, which were added to iOS 14 last year and are now finally making the jump to tablets. Like on iPhones, you'll be able to place widgets anywhere on the home screen, and you'll be able to replace the entire app grid with only widgets if you're crazy like that.

Finally, both iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 should have new privacy protections, including a new menu that will show you which apps are silently collecting data about you.

Apple will continue to update iOS 14 even after iOS 15 is released

Apple’s announcement of iOS 15 brought a new change that’s officially reflected on Apple’s software update pages. As MacRumors reports, the current iOS 14 will now let you choose whether you want to upgrade to iOS 15 as soon as its released or stick around on iOS 14 while still receiving critical security patches.

iOS now offers a choice between two software update versions in the Settings app. You can update to the latest version of iOS 15 as soon as it’s released for the latest features and most complete set of security updates. Or continue on iOS 14 and still get important security updates until you’re ready to upgrade to the next major version.

Apple does iterate that the most recent firmware will have the “most complete set of security updates” while the previous release will “still get important security updates”.

Historically, Apple has been adamant about iOS updates in the past, quickly disallowing iOS devices to downgrade to a recent update. This made sure that devices stayed with more recent firmware and discouraged downgrading to older software.

This new change gives customers time to update if they have device restrictions or requirements of iOS devices that are managed by an organization like enterprises and schools.

The first iOS 15 developer builds are now available for downloading to a test device. Apple expects to release the public beta sometime in July with the public release expected in the fall.
