Xiaomi Mix 4 debuts: under-display camera, Snapdragon 888+ and 120W charging

It took nearly three years but we finally have a true successor to the Mi Mix 3 and it’s a monumental leap forward. Welcome the Xiaomi Mix 4 – the brand’s first device to sport an under-display camera (or camera under panel as Xiaomi calls it) and arguably the largest leap forward in the series since the original Mi Mix shook up the smartphone world back in 2016.

Xiaomi Mix 4 debuts: under-display camera, Snapdragon 888+ and 120W charging

The big breakthrough here is hidden beneath the curved 6.67-inch AMOLED display where we find a 20MP selfie camera (1.6 µm sized pixels when the 4-in-1-pixel binning is applied) leaving the screen unblemished by cutouts. The workaround required a whole new type of flexible display and redesigned circuit array to maximize the transparency and in turn light reaching the selfie cam sensor.

Xiaomi used a new micro-diamond pixel pattern paired with rethought algorithms which ensure minimum light refraction. The area above the camera packs 400ppi density so even the tiniest of text remains perfectly readable. The whole panel is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, features a 120Hz refresh rate and FHD+ resolution.

Mix 4 features a ceramic back and comes in white, black and gray colors. The stereo speakers are tuned by Harman/Kardon.

The rear camera setup is equally impressive with a 1/1.33-inch 108MP ISOCELL HMX main sensor with OIS. It’s joined by an optically stabilized 8MP periscope module with 5x optical zoom and 120mm equivalent focal length. A 13MP ultrawide snapper with a free-form lens and a reported 1% edge distortion completes the trio.

Xiaomi went with the latest Snapdragon 888+ chipset at the helm paired with 8/12GB RAM and 128/512GB storage.

Driving the pixel hungry display and flagship chipset is a 4,500 mAh battery and it brings lighting quick 120W wired charging which can top up the battery in just 15 minutes in boost mode (21 mins in default) as well as 50W wireless charging which takes 28 minutes for a full recharge in boost mode.

Another key feature is the addition of ultra wideband (UWB) which allows for precise positioning data and smart device controls.

Mix 4 starts at CNY 4,999 ($770) and goes up to CNY 6,299 ($970) for the 12/512GB model. First sales in China are scheduled for August 16 while international availability will be detailed at a later point in time.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 may have a 64MP camera

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 will have a camera that will have a better sensor than Samsung’s 64MP ISOCELL Bright GW1, said Xiaomi’s Product Director Wang Teng in comment on Weibo, which has since been deleted.

Sony is yet to announce a 64MP sensor (though we’re sure one is coming), so there are no direct alternatives. Not yet at least.

Of course “better” is pretty vague when it comes to image sensors – it could mean it's larger or has improved light sensitivity, it’s not all about resolution.

Realme has already confirmed that it’s working on a 64MP phone with the Samsung GW1 sensor, which we’re sure will only intensify the rivalry between the two companies.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 details leak, launch expected on September 24

Xiaomi is planning to release its highly-anticipated flagship smartphone, the Mi Mix 4, on September 24 with a few surprises. This is coming from a fairly reputable source, so we have a good reason to believe the info.

Initially, the phone was planned for a mid-September release but since the release schedule is already packed with a couple of competitors, including the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, Xiaomi decided to push back the date a little. According to people familiar with the matter, the handset will feature the world's first 108MP sensor manufactured by Samsung. The camera sensor was announced last month and a rumor about Xiaomi adopting the new camera techcame out yesterday. So it's all in line with the intel we got so far.

In addition to the 108MP camera, the phone is expected to come with a 16MP ultra-wide lens and 12MP periscope camera, probably capable of 5x optical zoom.

Other notable features include a 5G-capable version of the phone, 12GB of RAM, and reverse wireless charging. There's also a possibility that the handset will come in two variants - with Snapdragon 855+ and with the standard Snapdragon 855 version. The Mi Mix 4 will also run Android 10 outside the box with the latest MIUI 11 software, which will be unveiled alongside the smartphone on September 24.

It all sounds good and all but we urge you to stay vigilant as we are not sure whether the information is correct or not. Only time will tell as well as official confirmation from Xiaomi.
