Up to now, no handset powered by Windows Phone has had a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor inside. But according to a rumor coming out of Asia, that interesting fact is about to change. ZTE is said to be working on a new handset named the ZTE Nubia W5. This would be a high-end Windows Phone flavored device with the Snapdragon 801 chip under the hood, 3GB of RAM and 64GB of native storage on board. The rear-facing camera is expected to be 13MP and features OIS. This phone would offer 4G connectivity and it would be all powered up by a massive 4500mAh battery.

This could be the top-shelf model that Windows Phone needs to show that there are other manufacturers beside Nokia (whose Devices and Services division now belongs to Microsoft) willing to take a big gamble on the platform. Keep in mind though, that despite a picture allegedly showing off the model, ZTE has not officially confirmed that this device exists, or is even in the works

If the ZTE Nubia W5 does become reality, will ZTE offer it in the states? On Wednesday, ZTE USA CEO Lixin Cheng talked about ZTE having relationships with U.S. carriers that other Chinese manufacturers fail to have. But so far, these have been low-end models like the ZTE Concord II that is now available at T-Mobile.

And if you need to be reminded about the difference between the Snapdragon 801 and Snapdragon 800, let's refresh your memory. The 801 offers a faster CPU and GPU clock speed, supports eMMC 5.0, and allows you to be on two calls at the same time with Dual SIM, Dual Active. Lastly, the AB/AC variations have a faster LPDDR3 interface.

Now our readers may know that we don’t set the bar too high when it comes to reporting Windows Phone rumours, but even to us the rumoured ZTE Nubia W5 is a step too far.

The supposed specs reads like a dream, with the latest Snapdragon 801processor, 3GB RAM, 64 GB storage, 13MP camera with optical image stabilization, 4G LTE and a massive 4,500 mAh battery.

Very strange then that the screen shot from the otherwise professionally rendered device features Nokia apps, and is clearly stolen from the Nokia Lumia 1520 press shots (see the time).

In short, while we are expecting a raft of new Windows Phones from the 17 new and existing OEMs, in all likelihood, unless they are a big name like Samsung, Nokia and HTC, expect relatively low end offerings.
