Samsung Galaxy Note20 and Note20 Ultra unveiled with upgraded screens, S Pen and cameras

For fans of the stylus there is no substitute – Samsung's Note line-up offers a freehand note-taking, doodling and annotating experience second to none. The 2020 generation brings improvements on all fronts, from software to hardware, to make the S Pen even better. The rest of the phones got major upgrades too, of course, but they come at a cost.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra

As the name implies, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra is built on the S20 Ultra platform. It has the same screen, a 6.9” Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with 1440p+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. You still need to set the rendering resolution to 1080p+ to get the 120 Hz mode, however.

The S Pen and the supporting Wacom layer on the screen have been updated to achieve 9 ms latency. Samsung says that at this point the experience is very much like writing on paper. Notes you take can be converted to Microsoft Office formats and synced with your other devices via Samsung Notes.

The S Pen can also be used for navigation with five new Anywhere actions. By "drawing" shapes in the air (that is without being anywhere close to the screen), you could go Back, open Recent apps, go Home and more.

gsmarena_004.jpg

Another change is that this is the first mobile display to be protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. It’s better at resisting scratches and can survive drops from 2 meters (6.5 ft) on a hard surface. There is an ultrasonic fingerprint reader embedded in the display along with a 10 MP selfie camera.

The rear camera still features the large 108 MP main sensor. It produces 12 MP photos with binning, records 8K videos at 24 fps with a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio (this ratio is also available for 1080p at 120 fps videos). There is optical stabilization but not Dual Pixel autofocus. However, the Phase Detection autofocus is now augmented with Laser AF (the 3D ToF sensor has been axed).

gsmarena_012.jpg

The Note20 Ultra still boasts a periscope lens with 5x optical magnification as opposed to 4x. There is now a 12MP sensor sitting behind it, replacing the 48MP sensor of the S20 Ultra. The bet here is that the longer zoom and brighter f/3.0 aperture will make up for the smaller 1.0 µm pixels (the 48 MP sensor had 1.6 µm pixels in its binned 12MP mode and was behind an f/3.5 aperture). Space Zoom is limited to 50x, but that’s not a huge issues as those magnification ratios are not very practical (especially not 100x).

The 120° ultra wide-angle camera maintains its 12 MP sensor with 1.0 µm pixels and f/2.2 aperture.

gsmarena_003.jpg

The chipset divide remains, with a partial upgrade. Much of the world will get the Snapdragon 865+ chipset, which is 10% faster than the 865 found inside the S20 phones. However, Europe and India are stuck with the old Exynos 990 rather than an upgraded version of the chip.

As far as Microsoft is concerned, games will run on its xCloud service – the Note20 duo are the first phones with special optimizations baked into their software. There will be over 100 Xbox titles available in mid-September with the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The screen's 240 Hz touch sampling rate matches dedicated gaming phones.

The battery has been bumped up to 4,500 mAh, which is 200 mAh more than the Note10+ but 500 mAh less than the S20 Ultra. The phone is bundled with a 25 W charger, which is the fastest supported (you can't use a 45W charger like with the S20 Ultra). The Note20 Ultra also supports 15W fast wireless charging and 9W reverse wireless charging.

gsmarena_011.jpg

Better sit down for this part – the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra starts at $1,300/€1,266/£1,180 for the model with 256GB of storage. There is a 512GB option as well. That’s more than the Note10+ cost at launch (€1,100) but less than the S20 Ultra from earlier this year (€1,345 for 128GB storage). A microSD slot is available for after-market memory expansion (a hybrid slot on dual-SIM models).

The phone will be available in three colors at launch: Mystic Bronze, Mystic Black and Mystic White. Shipments will start “in select markets” on August 21. There will be both 4G and 5G (with mmWave) models available, but availability will differ by market.

Note that if you pre-order either Note20, you can pick one of two perks - Galaxy Buds+ (not Live), which you can have now, or the Gaming bundle, which is coming later. The bundle features a wireless charger plus a wireless game controller. This bundle also includes 3 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate

Samsung Galaxy Note20

The Notes first split into two last year and the gap has grown significantly this generation. Perhaps this is why Samsung went with Ultra for the premium offering, rather than sticking with Plus.

The Galaxy Note20 comes with a larger screen than its predecessor – 6.7”, up from 6.3” – making it only slightly smaller than the Ultra. However, it is a flat panel rather than a curved one.

Galaxy Note20 Ultra and Note20 size comparison
gsmarena_013.jpg

This is a 1080p+ panel with the old Gorilla Glass 5 (even the Note10 used GG6). Those aren't the only downgrades compared to the Ultra either. The one that hurts the most is the refresh rate, a standard 60 Hz. This is also bad news for the S Pen as it misses out on the low latency upgrade.

The battery is also significantly bigger than before. At 4,300 mAh it trails the Ultra model only by a little (and it has a less power-hungry screen to feed). The vanilla Note10 had a 3,500 mAh battery. Anyway, the new battery will charge from 0% to 50% in half an hour using the included 25W charger.

The rear camera is lifted from the S20/S20+. The main 12MP sensor has large 1.8µm pixels, which features Dual Pixel autofocus and OIS. A 64MP sensor (1.0 µm) is used both as a telephoto camera (3x lossless zoom, 30x Space Zoom) and as an 8K video cam. Finally, there’s the familiar 12MP ultra wide-angle cam.

gsmarena_005.jpg

gsmarena_006.jpg

The chipset situation is the same – the original Exynos 990 in Europe and India, the upgraded Snapdragon 865+ elsewhere. However, RAM capacity is 8GB and the only storage option is 256GB built in and no microSD slot. The 5G model will also be available with 128GB storage.

The Samsung Galaxy Note20 4G will start at €950/£850, same as the vanilla Note10 last year. The 5G model starts at $1,000/€1,023/£950.

The vanilla model comes in three colors – the same Mystic Bronze, but an interesting Mystic Green as well. Also black gave way to the slightly lighter Mystic Gray.

Leaked Samsung Galaxy Note 20 case mold gives us an idea of what to expect

With Samsung’s Galaxy S20 line out of the way, leaks are starting to shift to the upcoming Galaxy Note 20. While Samsung usually updates its Galaxy Note line come the end of Summer, we’ve already seen some early rumors swirling around. Now, we get some idea on the possible design of the next Galaxy Note's back.

According to an image of the case mold of the official Galaxy Note 20 LED View Cover shared by Roland Quandt, the next flagship in the Note line will follow the new Samsung design language with a large rectangular camera cutout around the back. This one in particular looks similar in size to that on the Galaxy S20 Ultra and knowing Samsung's usual practices it seems logical that at least one of the Note20 versions will have that setup.

The button cutouts on the case appear to be housed exclusively on the right-hand-side unlike the Galaxy Note10 line which has them on the left side.

gsmarena_001.jpg

The only other leaks we’ve seen so far about the Note20 are that it will pack a Snapdragon 865 chipset, and a more fine-tuned 120Hz refresh rate display. There’s still plenty of time so we'll inevitably get more bits and pieces.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 alleged CAD renders leak with Galaxy S20 Ultra’s camera setup

A new set of renders and a short video clip show what the Samsung Galaxy Note20 will look like. The renders come from Pigtou in collaboration with who claims that these renders are based on drawings obtained by the outlet’s sources and not conceptual. The report mentions some elements of the render cannot be confirmed at this time.

The device (unsurprisingly) looks a lot like the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. It appears to have a similar camera module to the S20 Ultra. As typically is with the Note series, the Galaxy Note20 has a boxier appearance with more squarish corners.

gsmarena_001.jpg

The devices dimensions are 161.8 x 75.3 x 8.5mm, which is roughly the same size as the Samsung Galaxy Note10+. The dimensions of the camera module are even reported as well: 38.1mm by 21.9mm.

We’re expecting to see an even larger Samsung Galaxy Note20+ as well, which should be interesting. With the dimensions mentioned above (of the Note20), the report suggests it might be 6.7-inches diagonally, and the renders show the display is totally flat. We enjoy the idea that a Note device will no longer have curved edges. It’ll make it easier to use the S-Pen with.

gsmarena_003.jpg

The S Pen location has changed from the right to the left, which is likely what Samsung needed to do to get all the physical buttons over to the right side. The SIM tray is at the top of the handset

We’re glad to see the power button make its return to the right side of the phone, since the Note10 and Note10+ weirdly had it on the left side beneath the volume rocker. With the Note20, we’re seeing the volume and power keys on the right (and correct) side.

gsmarena_002.jpg

The Galaxy Note20 and Note20+ are expected to arrive with the same internals as the Galaxy S20 lineup, running either the Snapdragon 865 or the Exynos 990. The Galaxy Note20 and Note20+ have previously been rumored to come with 4000 mAh and 4500 mAh batteries, respectively.

The Samsung Galaxy Note20 is expected sometime in August during Samsung's bi-annual Unpacked event. Only this time, we can expect an online-only launch event.

First Samsung Galaxy Note20 Plus renders arrive

Samsung Galaxy Note20 appeared in CAD-based renders last week, and now it is time for the Galaxy Note20 Plus. The same source Pigtou_ reveals this phone will be slightly bigger than the Galaxy Note20, which is hardly a surprise. However, the camera design is a bit different, but the leakster makes no claim what any of the shooters are.

The Samsung Galaxy Note20 Plus will be 165 mm tall, 77.2 mm wide, and just 7.6 mm thick at the base (10.7 mm with the camera). This would make it slightly taller than the predecessor Samsung Galaxy Note10+ while keeping the other measures pretty much the same. The phone will remain with flat top and bottom and curved edges of the front and back panel.

gsmarena_002.jpg

The front will have a single punch-hole camera in the center, while the power key and the volume rocker will be on the right side - apparently positioning them on the left side on the Note10 family wasn’t a success. Also, the abomination called Bixby button appears to be gone for good, and thank goodness.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Plus
gsmarena_003.jpg

gsmarena_004.jpg

Specs-wise, so far we have only rumors that the Note20 Plus will have better cameras than its non-Plus sibling. We expect the phone to appear in August, and Samsung might do an online-only event due to the current situation.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra leaks in all its glory with full specs and images

The Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra expected to arrive on August 5 has leaked several times before, but today the flagship has leaked with its full specs and images, giving us a very detailed picture.

According to German blog WinFuture, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra will pack a 6.9" WQHD+ 19.3:9 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED Infinity-O display with a punch hole in the center for the 10MP selfie camera with dual-pixel autofocus and a fingerprint reader underneath for biometric authentication. The Note20 Ultra will be the first smartphone to feature Gorilla Glass 7.

Around the back, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra will pack a triple camera setup comprising a 108MP main, 12MP ultrawide, and 12MP telephoto units. The primary camera will record 8K videos and come with omnidirectional and laser autofocus, whereas the telephoto module will feature a periscope-style lens offering 5x optical zoom and 50x Space Zoom since Samsung decided to drop 100x Space Zoom that featured on the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

gsmarena_003.jpg

Under the hood, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra will have an Exynos 990 SoC in Europe which will be paired with 12GB RAM. The smartphone will have 256GB and 512GB UFS 3.1 storage options, and it will come with a microSD card slot as well for storage expansion.

On the software front, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra will boot Android 10 with One UI 2.x. It will also get automatic OneNote synchronization and optimized cloud gaming via Project xCloud thanks to Samsung's partnership with Microsoft. Additionally, Note20 Ultra users will have access to 90 gaming titles via Xbox Game Pass, making it a "portable gaming console".

gsmarena_002.jpg

Fueling the entire package will be a 4,500 mAh battery that will go from flat to 50% in 30 minutes with the bundled charger. Other highlights of the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra include S Pen stylus with 9ms latency, 5G support, USB-C 3.2, Bluetooth 5.x, NFC, Wi-Fi 6, dual-frequency GPS, Samsung DeX, IP68 rating, wireless charging, and AKG-tuned stereo speaker.

The Note20 Ultra will also come with a dual SIM card slot and support eSIM functionality. It will be offered in at least two colors - Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black - and will be priced higher than €1,000.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 leaks in full with flat 60Hz screen, plastic back, no microSD

If you enjoyed the recent full leak of Samsung's Galaxy Note20 Ultra, complete with specs and official-looking press renders, here's another one for you, this time focused on the Galaxy Note20, sans Ultra.

The vanilla model will come with a flat screen, as rumored before, and as made obvious by this render that portrays its side.

gsmarena_008.jpg

The Note20 will have both 4G and 5G versions, the former being ever so slightly cheaper. Regardless of that, you'll be getting a 6.7-inch 1080x2400 Super AMOLED touchscreen with 60Hz refresh rate, so clearly this is a step down from the Note20 Ultra. The theme continues with the most baffling speculation of this leak - apparently the Note20 will have a metal frame but a plastic back.

That means Samsung may position it as a much more affordable device than the Ultra. Hopefully. Anyway, back to specs, there's still an ultrasonic fingerprint reader under the display, the same one from the S20 series.

gsmarena_004.jpg

In Europe, the Note20 will be powered by Samsung's Exynos 990, the same chipset that's at the heart of the S20 family in markets that don't get a Snapdragon. The Note20 pairs that with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of non-expandable storage. There's also no headphone jack, unsurprisingly.

The main rear camera has a 12 MP f/1.8 sensor with huge 1.8um pixel size, and dual-pixel autofocus. An ultrawide camera joins it, with f/2.2 aperture and 1.4um pixels. There's also a 64 MP 3x zoom cam, with f/2.0 aperture and 1um pixels. 30x hybrid zoom will be offered, and support for 8K video recording is baked in too. On the front, a 10 MP selfie snapper sits inside the centered hole-punch. This has dual pixel autofocus too, and an f/2.2 aperture, as well as 1.22um pixels.

gsmarena_007.jpg

The phone will be IP68 certified, being able to survive in up to 1.5m of water for up to 30 minutes. It also has dual-SIM as well as eSIM support, and a 4,300 mAh battery which will charge from 0 to 50% in 30 minutes with the included adapter in the box. Wireless charging and reverse wireless charging are on board too.

The S-Pen has 26ms latency, which is higher than that of the Note20 Ultra's stylus. As with the bigger, more expensive sibling, expect a lot of the marketing to focus on cloud gaming, since this model will also be optimized for use with Microsoft's Project xCloud and Xbox Game Pass. The two companies will also collaborate around Office apps, and Wireless DeX.

Unsurprisingly, the Note20 will run Android 10 with One UI 2.x on top. The 5G model should be unveiled first, at the August 5 online event, and will arrive in Europe in Mystic Bronze, Mystic Gray, and Mystic Green. No details on pricing have been outed on this occasion.

Leaked Galaxy Note 20 5G, Note 20 Ultra 5G video reveals all details
The Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will be unveiled by Samsung later this week, but almost every detail about the smartphones has been leaked already. After the rear design of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was accidentally revealed by Samsung itself, all the color variants and specifications of the upcoming smartphones were eventually leaked over the past few weeks. Now, a promotional video of the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has been leaked, revealing all their headline features.

Noted leakster Evan Blass (@evleaks) has published a promotional video from AT&T of the two upcoming Galaxy Note 20 series smartphones on the internet. The video shows the Galaxy Note 20 5G in Mystic Green and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G in Mystic Bronze. It also confirms the existence of the Snapdragon 865+ chipset inside the smartphones, at least in the US. A 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED Infinity-O display for the Galaxy Note 20 and a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED Infinity-O display for the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra have been confirmed to feature a 120Hz refresh rate as well.

The Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s new and refined S Pen with a real “pen to paper feel” is also revealed in the leaked video. Samsung seems to have partnered with Microsoft to bring a feature that lets you convert notes into PowerPoint and Word files via the Samsung Notes app. Other improvements such as better organization of notes in the Samsung Notes app and 8K video recording with 33MP simultaneous still image capture are also talked about in the promotional video.

The video also reveals that the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a 108MP primary camera with 50x Space Zoom. The Galaxy Note 20 appears to feature a 64MP camera with 30x Space Zoom. Samsung seems to have equipped the Galaxy Note 20 with a 4,300mAh battery and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra with a 4,500mAh battery. The smaller of the two phones will be launched in three colors: Mystic Bronze, Mystic Green, and Mystic Gray. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will be available in Mystic Black, Mystic Bronze, and Mystic White colors.
