Exclusive: Galaxy Watch 6’s newer Exynos processor to bring faster performance

Galaxy Watch 4 (Classic) review 3

Samsung is expected to launch two new smartwatches—Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic—later this year, alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5. The upcoming smartwatches are expected to bring improved health tracking and features. It was rumored earlier this week that the Galaxy Watch 6 would feature enhanced performance. We are now bringing you some exclusive information regarding the smartwatch’s processor.

Galaxy Watch 6’s Exynos W980 processor to be 10% faster

We have learned that the Galaxy Watch 6 series will have a newer Exynos processor: Exynos W980. This new chipset will be more than 10% faster than the Exynos W920 chipset used in the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 series. While we don’t have information on the CPU and GPU configuration of the Exynos W980, Samsung may fabricate it using its newer 5nm process that was reported earlier, which could also lead to improved battery life. More information about this Exynos chipset could be revealed in the coming months.
The Galaxy Watch 6 will also feature a bigger and higher resolution screen. The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic will bring back the iconic rotating bezel for which Samsung’s smartwatches have been famous. The two upcoming smartwatches from Samsung will also feature thinner bezels. They also feature slightly higher-capacity batteries compared to their predecessors.
We can expect the Galaxy Watch 6 to feature all the existing features of the Galaxy Watch 5, including a circular OLED touchscreen, ECG, GPS, heart-rate sensor, health and fitness tracking, sleep tracking, and body composition analysis. It could also feature Wi-Fi, cellular connectivity, NFC, wireless charging, and Wear OS-based One UI Watch software.

BREAKING: Galaxy Watch 6 Classic design leaked, reveals rotating bezel

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic Bezel

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Watch 6 smartwatch lineup later this year. The next-generation smartwatches, based on Wear OS 4, will be launched alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and the Galaxy Tab S9 series. Ahead of the launch, the design of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic has been revealed through 3D CAD renders.

Galaxy Watch 6 Classic renders reveal rotating bezel

Reliable leakster OnLeaks has published the first set of CAD-based 3D renders of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic in collaboration with MySmartPrice. The images showcase the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic in its black avatar, featuring a metal case and silicone wristband with a magnetic clasp. It appears to have a 1.47-inch circular Super AMOLED screen surrounded by a thick rotating bezel, similar to the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.

The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic has two buttons on the right side, while the left side of the case is flush. On the rear, there is a heart rate and PPG (Photoplethysmography) sensors. While its specifications weren’t reported by the leakster, the Galaxy Watch 6 is expected to feature a barometer, body composition analysis, ECG, gyro, heart rate sensor, GPS, NFC, sleep tracking, and temperature sensor. Previous reports also indicate that the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic will have a screen with 470×470 resolution.

We had exclusively revealed a few weeks ago that the Galaxy Watch 6 and the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic will come equipped with the Exynos W980 chipset made using an improved 5nm fabrication process. It might bring new features powered by Wear OS 4 and One UI 5 Watch, including improved health tracking and Material You design.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 (Classic): This is what the new smartwatches look like

Samsung is also launching the new Galaxy Watch 6 series of wearOS-based smartwatches in July. The group is planning the "normal" versions in different sizes and also the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic , where the rotating bezel will return. We now have official marketing images.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 comes in a number of different editions, all of which share the same heart - the Samsung Exynos W930 SoC with a different clock speed . This also comes with an optionally integrated LTE modem, with which the Samsung smartwatches can remain connected to the Internet even without a connected smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 will be available again this year in two sizes, with a diameter of 40 or 44 millimeters. This does not change the external dimensions, but Samsung has fine-tuned its displays and is now installing slightly larger OLED panels in the smartwatches. Unfortunately, we don't know exactly how large the diameter of the screens will be, but it is visibly larger because the edges have shrunk.

Galaxy Watch 6 with sapphire crystal

This is emphasized again on Samsung's marketing images by means of the watch face used. Incidentally, Samsung uses sapphire glass throughout as a display cover, so that the watches should be quite resistant to scratches. There is quite a wide range of colors to choose from this year, with black and silver also being planned as a beige version - as will probably also be the case with the other new Galaxy smartphones and tablets presented at the Unpacked event to be presented in July.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic will probably only be available in black and silver. However, it is conceivable that Samsung will again offer further color variants via its online stores, although it is unclear which these will be. The Classic version of the Watch 6 brings the rotating bezel back again, whereby the edge around the displays, which are otherwise the same size as the normal editions of Samsung watches, is slightly wider.

The Classic version will therefore find its way into case widths of 43 and 47 millimeters and also stands out from the cheaper sister models due to the use of a leather strap. The bezel should also be able to control various functions of the operating system. As usual, all models are water resistant up to 5 ATM. We have not yet received any information on prices and technical data for the new Samsung smartwatches.

Galaxy Watch 6 Classic vs Watch 5 Pro: Not a replacement?

Samsung announced its Galaxy Watch 6 series at Unpacked. The Pro model is out, and the Classic is back in. The company hasn’t released a sequel to the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro this year, and instead, it brought back the physical rotating bezel through the revival of the Classic series. How does the new Galaxy Watch 6 Classic compare to the Watch 5 Pro from last year? Is it an outright replacement? Can the Classic be a Pro smartwatch in disguise?
Actually, the answer is no, surprisingly enough. Samsung didn’t play around when it named the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro the way it did. Even if the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic is newer and has a few advantages over the 2022 model, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro retains some qualities worthy of the “Pro” badge. And that’s not going to change through firmware updates. Here’s how these two smartwatches compare.

Galaxy Watch 6 Classic vs Watch 5 Pro: Rotating bezel or no

There’s a striking difference in design between the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. Even though the latter model has a relatively thick bezel that stands taller than the screen, it’s more of an aesthetic choice than anything else.
In contrast, the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic has a functional rotating bezel powered by a 3D Hall sensor. By twisting it around the circular display, users can interact with One UI Watch.

Galaxy Watch 6 Classic vs Watch 5 Pro: Displays

The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic is available in two sizes: 43mm or 47mm. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro sits right in the middle and is available with a 45mm case.
Similarly, the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic’s display measures 1.3 inches (43mm) or 1.5 inches (47mm), whereas the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has a 1.4-inch AMOLED.

In keeping with this theme, the Galaxy Watch 5’s display resolution falls somewhere between the smaller and larger Galaxy Watch 6 Classic models. The 2022 smartwatch has a display resolution of 450 x 450 pixels, whereas the 43mm and 47mm Galaxy Watch 6 have a resolution of 432 x 432 and 480 x 480, respectively.
If none of these details make that much of a difference, the display brightness might. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro tops out at 1,000 nits, but Samsung really pushed the limit on the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic display with 2,000 nits of peak brightness.

Galaxy Watch 6 Classic vs Watch 5 Pro: Fitness and health tracking

The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic is chock-full of new and improved fitness and health features, including better fall detection, on-device Sleep Coaching, personalized Heart Rate Zones, Track Run records, and Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications.
But all of these features are a part of One UI Watch 5. And since the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro and Watch 6 Classic use the same BioActive sensor, these One UI Watch features won’t remain exclusive to the 2023 model and will eventually be released for the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro through a firmware update, expected to roll out later this year.

With that in mind, it’s interesting to note that the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro does retain exclusivity over some fitness-related goodies, such as enhanced GPX (GPS exchange format) features, a GPX File Database, and Route Workout with support for running, walking, hiking, and cycling.
In Samsung’s view, these are pro-grade characteristics, and only Galaxy Watch 5 Pro users should be able to take advantage of them. A year into the Pro smartwatch’s life, they remain exclusive to this model, and this might never change.

Galaxy Watch 6 Classic vs Watch 5 Pro: Battery life and other specs

As usual, a new year brings better internal hardware, at least partially. The 2023 Classic series is powered by the newer Exynos W930 chipset rather than the W920. The W930 is more powerful and energy efficient.
In addition, the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic has 2GB of RAM instead of 1.5GB and bigger batteries (300mAh/425mAh) than the standard, non-Pro Galaxy Watch 5.
But even if the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has an older SoC, it reigns supreme in terms of battery life. With its 590mAh battery, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro offers up to 80 hours of battery life, whereas Samsung says that the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic can last up to 40 hours.

Galaxy Watch 6 Classic vs Watch 5 Pro: Conclusion

Comparing the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic with the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro isn’t as clear cut as we may have thought it would be before Samsung revealed the new smartwatches on stage at Unpacked.
True enough, the new Classic model has a few noteworthy upgrades compared to the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, such as newer firmware, more RAM, a better chipset, and a brighter screen.
However, the 2023 Classic model doesn’t outdo the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro in every area. There’s still a clear place on the market for the high-end 2022 Pro variant, particularly among fitness enthusiasts and battery life aficionados.
