Sonic Mania, Project 2017 Reveals Coming To SXSW 2017

SXSW 2017 have announced they’ll be hosting a second Sonic panel for this year’s event, set to reveal news about the upcoming Sonic Mania and Project Sonic 2017.

Gotta Go Fast: The Official Panel of Sonic the Hedgehog will be hosted by Takashi Iizuka (Head of Sonic Team), Roger Craig Smith (Voice of Sonic), Mike Pollock (Voice of Eggman), and everyone’s favourite social media manager Aaron Webber.

The panel, set to be an hour long, confirms that we’ll be seeing a new behind-the-scenes look at the new Sonic titles debuting this year — and a few more surprises could be in store.

"Dive into the world of Sonic the Hedgehog in this exclusive behind-the-scenes look at both Sonic Mania and the upcoming Sonic 2017! With presenters from SEGA and Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka, this panel will answer questions about both games, showcase a new reveal for each title, and will discuss Sonic’s resurgence in the world of gaming since the reveal of both games. Of course, with Sonic involved, who knows what other surprises might be in store?"

SXSW 2017 takes place March 10th to March 19th in Austin, Texas. Gotta Go Fast: The Official Panel of Sonic the Hedgehog will begin at 5:00pm CST (23:00 GMT) on March 16th. Get excited!

Sonic Mania Will Launch Same Day Across All Platform's, At The Same Price

According to a new interview with Sonic Community Manager Aaron Webber, no platforms will be getting any preferential treatment from Sonic Mania when it finally hits. According to the interview, conducted by Nintendo World Report, the game will be hitting the Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC at the same time and at the same price, although no further details were given on what the release date and price will be.

Webber also almost-sort-of confirmed that Sonic Mania will probably be utilizing the Switch’s Pro controller, although he cautioned that this should not yet be taken as a complete confirmation.

Sonic Mania Delayed To Summer 2017

This just in from the SXSW Sonic panel: Sonic Mania has been delayed from Spring 2017 to Summer 2017! Still no exact date revealed. According to the panel, the devs need more time to make sure the game is as good as it can be.

They said SEGA doesn’t want to disappoint its fans, and is making sure it is taking the time needed to make a high quality game. “Quality is our number one priority.”

Sonic Mania Will Feature Levels Inspired By Scrapped Mega Drive Stages

SEGA has revealed that the team working on Sonic Mania has been given access to a wealth of scrapped levels from past 2D Sonic games, opening the possibility of seeing levels like Dust Hill Zone and Genocide City in a completed form for the first time.

During an interview at EGX Rezzed in London, SEGA Product Manager Jim Dyer said that Sonic Team has shared a wealth of prototype documents with Christian Whitehead and Headcannon, the chaps behind the upcoming 2D retro platformer.

So far, SEGA has only revealed four stages – Studiopolis, Mirage Saloon and re-imaginings of Green Hill Zone and Flying Battery Zone. But Dyer hinted at levels that could be heavily inspired by previously-canned levels in Sonic 1, 2 and 3:

“There will certainly be other re-imagined versions of levels that we’ve seen in previous Sonic games. There will also be levels you haven’t seen before or have been altered so much that they are almost completely unrecognizable,” he said.

“We gave the team access to levels that didn’t make it into other Sonic games and they have been redesigned and re-engineered to work for Sonic Mania. You’re going to see lots of easter eggs and nods to previous games worked in that veteran Sonic players will certainly be able to spot.”

It’s unclear whether this sharing of information with Whitehead and Headcannon will result in realisations of levels once thought lost to limbo, or instead brand new stages that are inspired in some way by the scrapped material.

It certainly wouldn’t be the first time that this has happened. In the iPhone re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Whitehead developed a working Hidden Palace Zone stage, complete with boss – a feat possible after studying leftover components of the original Sonic 2 Mega Drive cartridge.

Rumour: Sonic Mania to Include Animated Cut Scenes?

CollinsMania.gif

Sonic Mania continues to build levels of excitement in our senior staffers not seen since the nineties; we’ve adored every little element and reveal of what is set to be a fitting homage to Saturn/Genesis/Megadrive-era Sonic, lovingly crafted by the Mania team.

Among many speculations, fans have suggested that Sonic Mania may include animations akin to those book-ending Sonic CD. Last week, our eagle-eyed SSMB members spotted this WIP short animation above, posted and then quickly removed from the tumblr of Max Collins. The scene depicts an exchange between Sonic and one of the yet-to-be-seen Hard Boiled Heavies (the character having only been partially revealed in Mirage Saloon’s background). Collins resume includes work for Studio Yotta and Cartoon Network, leading to the postulation that they may have been recruited to develop animations for the game.

While the animation could easily be dismissed as a fan tribute, IndyCotton on the Sonic Retro forums gives even more compelling evidence, by drawing a comparison to the HBH model and the Heavy Gunner silhouette reveal from SXSW, as seen below. This would seem to suggest the artist has heavily inferred the model from this silhouette (including features such as the cape and head crest), or more likely has access to the final character model of this particular HBH (“His Boiled Highness”, perhaps?).

While this is all purely hype and hearsay, we certainly hope there is truth, even if just elements, as this would be a wonderful addition to the game.

@Shiny mas os trabalhos (atenção que gostei da main theme do Sonic Forces, se bem que sinto falta dos Crush 40 xD) que fez no Studiopolis e no Mirage Saloon ainda são melhores, na minha opinião of course. xD :P

anyway

As always, we will keep you up to date on 2017 Sonic title announcements as they come.
