Sony has officially announced their new Double Layer DVD recorders, the DRU-700A and DRU-700UL. Available in internal and external configurations, these two drives can write to both DVD+R and DVD-R media at 8x and DVD+R DL media at 2.4x.
Sony Electronics is adding two DVD+R Double Layer (DL) DVD drives to its family of Dual RW burners. The internal DRU-700A and external DRX-700UL drives mark Sony's entry into Double Layer recording.

Nearly doubling the storage capacity of current DVD recordable discs, the double layer DVD drives allow users to record up to four hours of high-quality MPEG-2 video or up to 8.5 GB of data, music and/or images on compatible DVD+R DL media.

The new burners will debut with an initial DVD+R DL recording speed of 2.4X. They will also feature up to 8X DVD±R, 4X DVD±RW, 40X CD-R and 24X CD-RW recording, providing users with double layer, dual format, and high-speed burning all in one drive.

Double Layer Drives From Lite-On And Pioneer On The W

Double Layer Drives From Lite-On And Pioneer On The Way

With the taiwanischen drive assembly manufacturer Lite on (25, conditions D50 resounds) looks the Roadmap similarly: In April a 8X-Brenner for DVD+R and DVD r is to come out, also the DVD+R9 with 2,4X describes and in June then the 16X-Version. Lite on confirmed beyond that new co-operation with Sony (2, conditions C02 resounded), so that is to be assumed that, which will be identical to the next Lite on drive assembly the new DRU-700A von Sony. Through co-operation Lite on saves the horrenden license costs, while Sony profits from the supply with favorable drive assemblies.

And read but emergency leases jumps up also Pioneer surprisingly on the DVD+R9-Zug. Thus the next in July appearing burner (prospective designation DVR-A08) will describe DVD+R9 with 2,4X and both will burn DSVD+R and DVD r with 16X. At this time it will give if necessary very few 16X-Plus-Medien on the market. Verbatim spoke of the fact that it will be technically very difficult to hold this date. Therefore Pioneer wants to describe also 8X-Medien of select manufacturers with 16X. Thus Pioneer leaves its past rather conservative firm politics, which did not plan a over burning of media beyond the official specification.

As far as I can tell, Lite-On will be releasing two double layer drives within the next few months. The first with 8x DVD writing speeds and then a 16x version in June. Pioneer's DVR-A08 is expected to be able to write to both DVD+R and DVD-R media at 16x. It will be interesting to see if they can pull it off.

O Philips Retail Dual-Layer está "anunciado" para uns €165.
Lite-on's OEM nos €150 não seria assim tão estranho ...
