Sony BMG Plans to Drop DRM

Following a decade-long battle, it seems that the music industry and the internets are slowly making amends. This week, Sony BMG is finalizing the plan to drop DRM software from it's downloable library.

That would make Sony BMG the last of the four major record labels to drop DRM, behind Warner, EMI, and Vivendi. While the RIAA continues it's Inquisition against heretical organizations like Kazaa and LimeWire, the labels themselves are attempting to embrace the "new" technology after a decade of claiming it to be the "death" of the industry.

Another question is what this means for Apple's iTunes? It would appear that the labels have seen the success of Apple's little music store that could and now they want a piece of the pie, too.

All things aside, bravo to Sony and the other big 3 for finally realizing what the rest of the world did 10 years ago. Way to innovate!

I don't know about you, but I'll bet your mom can't wait to download the DRM-free version of Born Free.
