Sony: PS3 vs Wii is like PS2 vs N64

David Reeves set a hard precedent for classic Sony Computer Entertainment Europe quotations, but his replacement Andrew House is trying his best to catch up.

Newly appointed SCEE president Andrew House has argued that Nintendo Wii owners will upgrade to the PlayStation 3 at some point as they seek more advanced features; he attempts to prove this point by comparing this generation's battle to the PlayStation 2 versus the Nintendo 64.

"If you look back at previous life-cycles, like PS2 versus N64, we have lots of data that suggests that lots of people bought into N64 as their entry level gaming device, and were happy to upgrade to a more powerful machine later in the life-cycle when the price point was right for them," House told Edge.

"I think we’re going to see this later on PS3, and the fact that it’s a Blu-ray player as well and that there’s a [greater] wealth of network based experiences than are perhaps available on the device they already have will add to the proposition. I think that will definitely be a factor in the marketplace."

Now, House (and the relation to Hugh Laurie's TV character seems a little too kind) could be politely referring to the Nintendo Wii as a last generation console, since the Nintendo 64 released four years before the PlayStation 2 - thus those who owned N64's upgraded to the PS2.

That is unless House actually thinks that the PS2 and N64 were going head to head, of which they were for around a year from 2000-1; the poor N64 didn't really stand a chance. That generational battle was between the PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube and Xbox; the PS2 winning that battle is certainly one to shout about, but at least get your history right.

Wii owners might well upgrade to the PS3 or 360, but the battle is going on right now and the Wii is winning. However, House believes that the PS3's life-cycle could even exceed ten years:

"There are a few things that drive this to a significantly longer than ten-year life-cycle for me. One is the traditional market dynamic that as prices come down you build down and out through the pyramid to a new type of consumer, and the motion controller we showed yesterday – and gave a firm release date on – changes the experience and allows us to bring in a new audience.

"And then over that there’s the network offering and a different way – and PSP Go is another aspect of that – for consumers to consume content. All three of those give us a tremendously strong opportunity to really build that platform life-cycle up over the long term."

I think this is the kind of Sony arrogance and idiocy we hoped was put behind them.

Adorava ver a nintendo a dizer algo do genero:

"A wii está para a PS3, como a PS1 para a N64, a PS3 e a N64, eram mais potentes graficamente, mas nao foi isso que as fez vender mais!"

(embora eu ache que nessa altura a N64 tivesse um catalogo melhor, mas na altura com aquela idade nao tinha noção de tal coisa e tinha uma PS1 :D)
