Sony Recorders Rip to PSP
New HDD/DVD units encode for PSP.
by Gerry Block
April 10, 2006 - Sony is releasing two new products in their RDZ media-recorder lineup. The RDZ-D97A and RDZ-D77A boast 400GB and 2500GB of HDD space, respectively. Adding to the specs, a Japanese-spec Hi-Vision 1080i tuner is accompanied by two analog tuners, allowing for hot three-way recording action.

Of particular interest to gamers, the units will be able to encode broadcasts directly to the PSP for playback on the go. Also trend-setting, the units will support DLNA's Digital Transmission Content Protection over IP, which allows copy-protected 1080i recordings to be shared within a home network.

Direct to PSP recording sounds like a pretty tight idea. Several companies have stand-alone MPEG-4 Recorders, like Neuros' MPEG-4 Recorder 2, that perform similar on-the-fly encoding for the PSP. As a built-in option with support for Managed-Copy features, Sony's own effort may be able to broaden the encoding audience and educate consumers about the benefits of fairly-enforced managed-copy for sharing media over a variety of devices. No American release dates have been set, so lets keep our fingers crossed.
