Splinter Cell: Blacklist spotted for Wii U

According to a GameStop advertisement in Ireland, Splinter Cell: Blacklist could be coming to Nintendo’s next-gen hardware.

Our friends over at Eurogamer are reporting that this image (via NeoGAF) was seen at the retailer, suggesting that Sam Fisher’s next adventure may not exclude the Wii U after all.

So far, Blacklist has been officially confirmed for a spring 2013 release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Ubisoft declined to issue a statement on the matter.

A trailer released today for Splinter Cell: Blacklist shows a new twist on an old stealth mechanic that helps Sam Fisher cope with the game's claustrophobic environments. Check out the video above to see Blacklist's take on Closer Than Ever, a mechanic that first appeared in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, equipping Fisher with close quarters combat techniques and accompanying animations in Ubisoft's upcoming reboot.

Splinter Cell Blacklist: Sam Fisher Was 'Always A Focal Point'

Ubisoft had no intention to remove Sam Fisher from the Splinter Cell series, even without Michael Ironside.

Spiinter Cell: Blacklist has been a hard sell for fans of the franchise. Not only did Splinter Cell: Conviction target a more action-based audience, but without voice actor Michael Ironside fans felt even Sam Fisher was headed into decline.

Despite all the changes, however, Ubisoft never considered using a new character for the series.

"We never considered a new lead character for Splinter Cell Blacklist," Ubisoft's Maxime Beland tells us, "Sam Fisher was always the focal point when we conceived the game."

There's more reason to this than a nostalgic love of the character, however. "Sam is a deadly spec op," says Beland, "and through his years of training he has fine tuned both lethal and non-lethal skills and we felt it was really important to open up the range of gameplay to better reflect this reality."

Using Sam Fisher as a lead character meant Ubisoft could "tap into his vast pool of training and skills."
