April 10, 2002 - Someone say World War II? We must be talking about a videogame. Believing there is still yet more life left to be exploited in this now quickly tiring backdrop for play, 4X Studio has announced its next effort, the first-person shooter Stalingrad.
The 3rd Reich is at the height of its power in the fall of 1942. Only Stalingrad, the city branded with the name of what Hitler sees as his last true opponent, stands between the Nazi menace and total European domination.
Taking a cue from Enemy at the Gates, which itself took inspiration from a factual story (inspiration does not always walk hand-in-hand with truth), Stalingrad is the story of a young Russian endowed with supreme sniping abilities. Now there's a skill that can only be developed through rigorous practice as a youth. As this Russian distance killing machine, gamers will navigate the war torn rubble of Stalin's pride and force German troops to bow in fear (by shooting them in the face).
Missions will be dealt out, and must be completed solo, or with the assistance of bots and even another friend in...wait for it...a cooperative mode! Coop play of single-player missions can be an amazing thing if done properly. Suffice to say we have high hopes.
In keeping with today's popular hybrid theory (that works in more ways than one), the game also promises to incorporate an experience system that allows for character evolution throughout play. As skills advance, more Germans will find themselves uncontrollably hunching over from bullet induced head pain.
No official release date has been given on this, what 4X is calling a faithful recreation of the era, but please enjoy the screenshots below. Dare I say the digital recreation of a destroyed Russian city has never looked better?
