Toshiba may drop support for its own high-def format

Perhaps not wanting to be the last off a sinking ship, Toshiba could soon be abandoning the HD DVD format it helped bring to market, if the Hollywood Reporter is to be believed.
According to the report’s sources, Toshiba will be pulling the plug on its HD DVD format sometime in the coming weeks. The official word from Toshiba, predictably, is that it is still behind HD DVD as the format of choice.
"Based on its technological advancements, we continue to believe HD DVD is the best format for consumers, given the value and consistent quality inherent in our player offerings," said Jodi Sally, Toshiba’s VP of marketing.
Interestingly enough, Toshiba didn’t completely put to rest any ideas that the company could change its stance in the format war. "Given the market developments in the past month," continued Sally, "Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly in light of our recent price reductions on all HD DVD players."
Possibly urging Toshiba to drop HD DVD are the recent events transpired since Warner Bros. announced at CES 2008 that it would go Blu-ray Disc exclusive this summer. Most recently, online rental giant Netflix announced that it too would be dropping HD DVD stock, while Best Buy would begin to push Blu-ray Disc as the preferred format.
In what could be the final nail in the coffin for the format, Wal-Mart today announced its plans to drop HD DVD players and software stock starting this June.

Não é bem assim, o Blu-ray não é só de uma empresa, é de um consorcio constituido pela Hitachi, LG , Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK, Thomson, etc....e entre estas empresas vai sempre existir concorrência que vai levar a baixar os preços num futuro próximo.

Toshiba to exit HD DVD, end format war-NHK

TOKYO (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp is planning to stop production of equipment compatible with the HD DVD format for high-definition video, allowing the competing Blu-Ray camp a free run, public broadcaster NHK reported on Saturday.

Toshiba is expected to suffer losses amounting to tens of billions of yen (hundreds of millions of dollars) to scrap production of HD DVD players and recorders and other steps to exit the business, Japan's NHK said on its website.

No one at Toshiba could be reached for comment.

The format war between the Toshiba-backed HD DVD and Sony Corp's Blu-Ray, often compared to the Betamax-VHS battle in the 1980s, has slowed the development of what is expected to be a multibillion dollar high-definition DVD industry.

Toshiba was dealt a blow on Friday when Wal-Mart Stores Inc said it would abandon the HD DVD format, becoming the latest in a series of top retailers and movie studios to rally behind Blu-ray technology for high definition DVDs.

Toshiba plans to continue selling HD DVD equipment at stores for the time being but will not put resources into developing new devices, NHK said.

Venham mas é os leitores baratos, que eu quero começar a aproveitar o meu belo televisor...
 
No fórum Blu-ray já se comenta uma imagem de um retailer que fala do "Transformers" para esse formato, o que significa que também a Paramount/Dreamworks saltou do barco HD-DVD para o Blu-ray.
Só falta a Universal. :D

Só é pena é a 'guerra' ter durado este tempo...Se tivesse acabado à alguns meses, com todas as empresas no BD e sem incertezas quanto ao futuro do padrão do Home cinema de certo que a tecnologia estaria um pouco mais desenvolvida, os leitores provavelmente estariam mais baratos, o preço dos filmes também e já a questão que separava o hd-dvd do Bd a nivel de opçoes nos filmes [legendas, etc..] estaria implantado nos filmes em Blu-Ray Disc..

Agora pessoal que comprou leitores HD-dvd..ardeu.. Principalmente a jogada da Toshiba de leitores a 150€ foi muito má, foi mesmo para despachar stock..
Claro que são bons leitores de dvd à mesma.... Mas à partida quem comprou leitores Hd-dvd queria filmes..Hd...
Agora para terem filmes Hd vão ter que investir noutro leitor.. :S
E quem comprou portateis toshiba com leitores Hd-dvd também perdeu dinheiro.. pagou pela capacidade Hd do portatil e no final de contas nem Hd nem armazenamento em discos Hd-dvd... Mas claro neste caso têm o portatil à mesma e têm a drive dvd e se futuramente quiserem mais armazenamento ou filmes Hd é comprar drive externa..
