Ubuntu 11.04 Is Codenamed The Natty Narwhal

Mark Shuttleworth has just announced via his blog that Ubuntu 11.04, which will be released in April of 2011, is codenamed the Natty Narwhal.

For those that haven no idea what a Narwhal is, it follows earlier Ubuntu code-names of being an animal, and the Narwhal is a medium-sized toothed whale that lives in the Arctic. They're a unique animal and you can find out more about them if you wish over at Wikipedia. The Natty Narwhal succeeds the Maverick Meerkat, Lucid Lynx, Karmic Koala, Jaunty Jackalope, Intrepid Ibex, Hardy Heron, Gutsy Gibbon, Feisty Fawn, Edgy Eft, Dapper Drake, Breezy Badger, Hoary Hedgehog, and Warty Warthog. The Natty Narwhal may not be the best Ubuntu code-name to date, but at least it's better than Fytnargin, which is what Fedora 14 was almost called.

In Mark's Natty Narwhal blog post, he shares that with Ubuntu 11.04 they will continue to improve the sleekness and style of Ubuntu Linux, Ubuntu Narwhal will take special interest in "making the most of the amazing capabilities of modern graphics hardware, both for outer beauty and for inner efficiency", and Ubuntu 11.04 will continue to have a great focus on ARM support and other low-power systems.

Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" is due for release this October while Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" is set to be christened in April of 2011.

Nunca percebi porque é que dão tanta importância ao nome de código. Lembro-me que houve aí uma versão qualquer do Ubuntu (acho que foi o Maverick Meerkat) que vi imensa gente a implicar com o nome.

Wayland Is Now Available In Ubuntu 11.04

Canonical's Bryce Harrington has just announced he has uploaded a snapshot of the Wayland Display Server to the Universe repository for Ubuntu 11.04, a.k.a. the upcoming "Natty Narwhal" Linux release.

Though before getting too excited, this of course is just a snapshot for experimenting and is not installed by default nor is it really usable for anything outside of experiments. It will not be until Ubuntu 11.10 or later where Wayland will be used with Ubuntu's Unity desktop in supported hardware/software configurations.

With this Wayland snapshot found in the Ubuntu Natty repository, it's also months out of date. In order to have Wayland work with Natty's Mesa 7.10 stack, which lacks some of the recent EGL/OpenGL changes in Mesa 7.11-devel (Git master) that are needed by the latest Wayland code, an older Wayland snapshot was pulled. Bryce hopes to pull in a newer snapshot of Wayland that is compatible with Mesa 7.10, but still that snapshot is expected to be from January and thus still out-of-date. More bleeding edge packages are also expected to be uploaded to the xorg-edgers repository.

This Ubuntu Wayland package should work with the open-source Intel, ATI/AMD, and NVIDIA (Nouveau) drivers.

As said by Bryce on Ubuntu-X, "I don't imagine this to be of any use to end users. The purpose of this packaging work is foundational; to establish a starting point for packaging and lay the first few bricks of what will probably be a big house. My hope is that the availability of this package makes it that much easier for toolkit and app developers to experiment with Wayland on Ubuntu and start laying their next layer of bricks."

Vamos lá ver se o Wayland acaba por substuir o X11. Mas quanto muito será lá para 2012 que este atinge uma maturidade suficiente para ser fiável no dia-a-dia. Penso eu...

Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha 3 Released

While Red Hat / RPM distribution fans can be celebrating the release of Scientific Linux 6.0, early adopters of Ubuntu "Natty Narwhal" can be testing out the release of Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha 3.

The third alpha release pulls in the latest Linux 2.6.38 kernel development code, Upstart 0.9, a dpkg 1.16 preview, rebuilds all main packages against Python 2.7, and simplifies the Ubuntu desktop installation. Other features of Ubuntu 11.04 include improvements to the Ubuntu Software Center, better Ubuntu One integration, the Ubuntu ARM Netbook edition sporting the new Unity 2D interface, and the most dramatic change is the new Unity interface to the Ubuntu 11.04 desktop. There are also improvements to Ubuntu Server, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu.

Details and download links for Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha 3 are available here. Up next is the Ubuntu 11.04 Beta at the end of March and then the final release of Ubuntu 11.04 is planned for 28th of April.

Aquela barra à esquerda é péssima no meu EeePC

Muda!

Works like a charm.
