As gráficas sis são problema no ubuntu? são problema em gnu/linux...
o que não consegues instalar ? isso em modo vesa / segurança deve dar.

Bem, alguém que é capaz de instalar esses sistemas operativos todos não deve precisar de grande ajuda neste problema 
Agora a sério, o guia tem erro: o menu.lst está em /boot/grub e não em /home/grub.
Pelo que vi é só adicionar as opções "apm=off acpi=force noapic nolapic nopcmcia noapci nosmp pnpbios=off nomce" ao arranque do kernel. Claro que a linha do kernel há-de ser diferente da que está no guia (até porque o Ubuntu actual usa um kernel mais recente). Mas lá está, o guia não explica isso...

eu acabei de instalar linux ubuntu 12.04 no meu style note da tmn e está a funfar, tanto que estou nele agora mesmo a responder-te a este tópico 
corri com o live cd, e foi só instalar
ahh e as minhas configs de disco foram:
4 Gb de swap
20 Gb de /root
e o resto dos 250 Gb de /home
já tinha tentado o 10 e o 11 e não funcionaram, este já dá portanto se quiseres experimentar
e desculpem lá o desenterro :C
