Sony is at it again, with wild swings between liberal and conservative announcements. SD Cards integrated one moment, more needless Memory Stick formats introduced another. It must have popped happy pills recently though, as multicoloured laptops are now on the table.
Dropping its fetish like obsession with black and silver, the King of Proprietary has added (Peal) White, (Sky) Blue, (Jade) Green and (Raspberry) Red (I think it’s pink personally) finishes to its new FJ series of notebooks. Other manufacturers have been doing this sort of thing for years of course, but coming from Sony it is akin to spotting your grandmother getting down to Maximo Park.
There’s plenty of grunt inside these fluffy exteriors though, with Pentium M 740 and 750 processors on offer, while basic configurations include 512MB of DDR2 RAM and capacious 100GB HDDs. All come equipped with a 14.1in, 1280 x 800 XBrite widescreen display too, integrated web camera, DVD rewriter and the mass of connectivity options we’ve come to expect, including 802.11b/g wireless and USB2.0 and FireWire ports.
Weighing in at 2.4Kg the FJs remain portable and they don’t cost the earth with prices starting at just over a grand (£1,006) including VAT. So if you’re a girlie, or just one of those guys who likes to wear pink shirts (I’m not here to judge… much), Sony’s latest could be right up your alley. On the other hand, if you’re a fan of Steven Siegal movies this range (and this planet) probably isn’t for you.
