[Wii] Developer Support Thread

Imagino algo entre um Onimusha e The Legend of Zelda.

Midway
Asked about the company's efforts for the Wii, the executives noted that the company was already a strong proponent of the platform, offering four launch window titles, and also promised three more unannounced titles for 2007 in addition to the forthcoming Mortal Kombat, two of those exclusive to the console.

Hudson
NP: Particularly since E3, many publishers and developers have shifted their resources to increase support for the DS and Wii. You’ve already released a couple of Wii titles, and also developed Mario Party 8, which will be published by Nintendo next month, so you’ve clearly been working with the console on multiple projects for quite some time. Does Hudson seem to have more of a focus on Wii than other platforms, or is support spread pretty evenly across the competitors?
Lee: Yes, we have been on board the Wii and DS bandwagon right from the start. We loved these systems because they shifted focus away from the typical gaming experience and introduced new ways of having fun. You’ll see us continue to support both these platforms over the next many years, more than most other platforms. Some of the new games we have in development are pretty darn cool. Wish I could talk about them!

Majesco:
Gamasutra: As a company, your last handful of announcements have been for titles exclusively for Nintendo platforms. Specifically, Majesco has announced three titles for the Nintendo DS, one for the Game Boy Advance, and another for the Wii. Is the company interested in the PSP, or are there plans to phase out PSP support?

Liz Buckley: Although our current product line is composed of SKUs for Nintendo’s platforms, we are by no means phasing out support for Sony’s systems.

We continue to evaluate new products on a regular basis to determine whether they’re a good fit for our line up. Our focus remains on handheld systems and the Wii, though we do opportunistically pursue titles on other platforms if it makes sense for our business model.

GS: Is Majesco planning additional Wii titles besides Cooking Mama: Cook Off and Bust-A-Move: Bash?

LB: Most definitely. We have another Wii title in development now and are looking to expand our line-up with additional SKUs for this promising platform.

Matsuno Developing for Wii
Former Final Fantasy XII director loves the Wii.

At Nintendo's Wii press conference in Tokyo today, Yasumi Matsuno, director of Final Fantasy XII (well, until he left the project midway through its development) and other popular RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics and Ogre Battle, stated that he is developing for the Wii and expressed his love for the platform.

Matsuno, who pulled a Dave Chappell and quit Square-Enix midway through Final Fantasy XII's development and kind of went into seclusion, is working on his Wii ideas for a new game developer (though which one has yet to be revealed).

Parappa the Rapper creator planning to develop Wii game

"Wii is a very good piece of hardware. Many talented people from Nintendo make great ideas for game hardware, of course. Already I've been starting to think about Wii software, but it's very hard sometimes. Because can you keep shaking the controller for hours?

"Players can't spend a long time on gameplay, so this can be tough. So I respect Nintendo's activities, but for software designers like us, it's very hard."

However, Matsuura said he is currently in the planning stages of developing a game for Wii - with work set to officially begin "soon, maybe".

Capcom to boost Wii, DS support

Capcom has announced plans to build on their Wii and DS support. They said that this process will begin immediately. Capcom currently has 14 titles in the works for the DS, and 6 titles for the Wii. It really is great to see more support coming from a major third party like this. Capcom has always worked well with Nintendo, it should be interesting to see what else they do with the Wii.

Hmm... 6 titulos para a Wii?

Só conheçemos 4... Zack and Wiki/Treasure Hunter Z, Resident Evil 4 Wii, Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles e Devil Kings 2.

During the course of the conversation, a multitude of topics were touched upon, from Konami's ramped-up support of the Nintendo and the Wii, to whether Elebits creator Shingo Mukaitoge is being groomed as a new face for the firm - read on for the answers.

Konami is having a lot of Wii and Nintendo console support right now, moreso than big-budget stuff. What is the rationale behind that?

Marc Franklin:
Konami has always been a strong supporter of Nintendo platforms. We were one of the first companies to come out with original titles on the DS, we were a supporter of the GameCube, and made lots of titles for the GBA.

The Wii, I think, embraces a lot of the innovation and creativity that Konami is known for, and provides an amazing outlet for our developers to design incredible games. You're seeing games like the next generation of DDR come out on the Wii -- called Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Party -- to provide full-body immersion in a dance game.

We also partnered with Hudson recently to do some Wii games like Wing Island, and Marblemania, which is doing well. The Wii platform in and of itself echoes and provides really great creativity for Konami developers.

(...)

In the U.S., it seems like developer names are getting more and more important. Is Shingo Mukaitoge someone you guys are grooming as a new face for Konami?

MF:
Konami certainly has many world-class developers, and we don't single out anyone in particular. With that said, Mukaitoge-san is certainly a rising star. He's improved himself with Elebits, which many people believe was one of the most innovative games that came out for the Wii.

He then announced a new game called Dewy's Adventure, and that is a very promising title. It looks extremely good. In fact, many of the press, when they first saw the gameplay, thought it looked like a first-party title. I think there is a lot of talent with Mukaitoge-san, and we're all looking forward to what he's going to be able to produce.

(...)

Do you feel that Nintendo has properly marketed the Wii to expand its demographic?

MF:
They did a great presentation. I think they hit the nail on the head. The industry, overall, if you look at the publishers, is really starting to take a better look at the mass consumer, because that's where we're going to get our growth.

Nintendo did a really great job with their marketing campaign with the Wii, and you're seeing other people do that too. They're not avoiding the core consumer, but they're also thinking about how to get to the mass consumer in innovative ways that make sense to them, whether it's through social networking or speaking to the consumer in ways that they identify with.

Do you think that the Wii's success is sustainable?

MF:
You just need to look at the sales so far. It's done extremely well, and it's a great machine. So is the 360, and so is the PS3. They all have their own positioning. It goes back to the publisher, though. It matters how we create the best games possible for those systems that fulfill the needs of our fans and consumers, but that also help promote the industry and push video game sales and hardware sales forward.

Entrevista da THQ:

You are betting big on the Wii. But historically, independent game publishers haven't done very well on Nintendo platforms. Right now we are yet to see an independent publisher game for the Wii break into the top 10 NPD game charts. Could your confidence in Nintendo be misplaced?

Farrell:
THQ, as far as I can remember, has been the No. 1 third party on Nintendo. It is not uncommon for first parties like Nintendo to be very strong out of the gate. They invented the technology and can be ahead of others. But we think our demographic maps very well to theirs.

Nintendo has always been very strong with the slightly younger gamer. Our mass-market brands like WWE [WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008] , and kids titles like the Pixar games work very well on the Wii.

So, a year or two from now, you will have a THQ Wii game on the charts. I guarantee you WWE, which we ship in November, will be in the top ten. WWE is a game made for the Wii. Can you imagine the throwing and grappling with the Wii controller for that game? It's going to be a lot of fun.

Strauss Zelnick, Chairman da Take-Two:

“To be perfectly frank, I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to realize what’s going on with Wii and DS. I will tell you that very quickly we turned to both 2K and to Rockstar and said guys, we need a DS strategy and a Wii strategy and we are working on it. As we get into the next quarter and into budget season for 2008, everybody in this company is completely focused on it.

Having said that, development cycles are long. Sports aren’t as good as games develop for specific platforms but we are looking at all of them across the board for Wii and DS. I will tell you that carnival games that we’ve announced for the Wii have gotten a lot of attention in the marketplace, as well as with our first-party partners. So we are pretty excited about that.

We have some — some have been announced, some Wii titles have been announced and we are working to put more out on the Wii and DS. ”

Denis Dyack, Silicon Knights:

NWR: And, following up on the question about the Wii, since Silicon Knights is an independent developer, and you’re contracting with multiple publishers, currently Microsoft and Sega, do you think there is a point in the future where you might consider doing a project on the Wii? Or is the technology of the Wii such that you really couldn’t consider that possibility until Nintendo announces something like a Wii 2.0 that would have more advanced graphics capabilities?

Dyack:
Well, to answer the first question, we’d consider working on the Wii today, we’d consider working on the Wii immediately, and is there a possibility of us working on the Wii, yeah, absolutely. I think that it depends on the type of game we’re trying to make, but I'd say the possibility is very high. I think from a perspective of "What’s going to happen?" it's the timing and the project and how we feel about what we’re working on, does it fit? If it fits, we’ll do it without question. The Wii is clearly very successful and it’s a great console and it wouldn’t make any sense for us not to consider it. We would always consider it. And, you know, time will tell in the future, if and when we have something to announce on the Nintendo, you guys will be one of the first we come to.
