EA's racer gets a brand new lick of paint
The Need For Speed series has come in for a fair bit of flak from gamers and critics alike in the last few years. It's the law of diminishing returns: The more EA churns out a yearly update of its famous arcade racer, the more the quality dips, the public lose interest and critics get sick of playing the same damn thing again and again.
So you might be excused for thinking the same about Nitro. But the team at EA Montreal are determined to prove this theory wrong with a complete re-boot of the series.
Fast And Furious
For the first time, this version of Need For Speed has been built from the ground up and specifically designed for Wii, hence the unique moniker; HD platform owners will be getting a very different Need For Speed game called Shift later this year. So there's no shoddy porting here - a gripe common to the last two NFS games on Wii - and good reason to feel that EA is taking this very seriously indeed.
Pleasingly, the game's creators are focused solely on the creation of the Wii title and want to overturn the notion that Need For Speed games are for brainless petrolheads.
From the early code we played, they're doing a solid job. Holding the Remote sideways, you tilt to steer and use the other buttons to accelerate. The team told us that there will be other control schemes available including the old faithful Nunchuk-and-Remote and even GameCube and classic controller support. A nice touch for those uninterested in the motion control steering schemes.
The good news is that Nitro's motion control works well. In the tight, windy track new played on, there was plenty to deal with - rival racers as well as police in pursuit.
While the track in question wasn't particularly challenging, the opposition was. Coupled with what EA describe themselves as an over-the-top sensation of speed, it chugs along at a decent rate, with plenty of on-screen action.
The nitro mechanic of the title is a boost system that rewards drifting and jumps. A shake of the remote activates your nitro, and the sense of speed steps up another satisfying notch.
Among the other on-screen displays, there's a Heat level which builds as a result of smashing into innocent Sunday drivers, other coppers and blazing through (and sometimes directly into) speed cameras. Pick ups dotted about the tracks will help lower your wanted level, so it's all fairly straightforward stuff.
Days Of Thunder
There are shortcuts placed about the tracks too, but as with most EA franchise updates, there's a gimmick too - the ability to 'Tag' the environments. As long as you're leader of the pack, your tag is plastered all over the scenery and at the end of the race there's a breakdown of who's tagged the most, handy for riling your rivals. At this stage it's not clear how this will be used in a practical way, but we did get a knowing smile when we asked if we could design our own tags.
We were also shown a really impressive car creation and customisation tool, which gives you plenty of scope to pimp your ride to whatever requirements you wish. We're going for Westwood-level pimpery, obviously.
The look of the game takes an exaggerated feel, so the cars on offer aren't the super-precise ones you've seen in the racing sims you've seen on other formats. The focus here is clearly arcade racing, and an awful lot of time and effort has gone into the sense of speed - we can happily report that it's coming along well.
So EA has a job on its hands to banish the memories of the completely forgettable Need For Speeds in recent years. With Nitro, it seems EA finally has the right idea. It has started afresh and built Nitro on both Wii and DS from the ground up. Top quality racers on Wii and DS are relatively few and far between - could this be the game to end all that?
