[Wii] Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces (Namco, Ace Combat Team)

Porco Rosso, do Miyazaki ;)

Tal e qual!!! Porco Rosso :D Adorei aquele filme que vi...

A ver se encontro à venda em alguma loja UK um set de filmes dele ou isso :) Os três que conheço: The Spiriting Away of Sen and Chihiro, Howl's Moving Castle e Porco Rosso são brilhantes...

Hands-on Siliconera:

Sky Crawlers Works Best With Slight Movements

I played just enough Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces with Xseed to get a feel for the controls. Project Aces developed an innovative motion control system where the remote acts as a throttle and the nunchuck controls the direction of your plane. No, not the analog stick on the nunchuck. Tilting the nunchuck moves the plane.

It’s tempting to swing the nunchuck wildly when an enemy plane whizzes by. Instinctively, I wanted to do that, but Sky Crawlers isn’t designed for jerky movements. Ace pilots gently tilt the nunchuck and close in on their targets with somersaults. Once you’re near a mark a meter starts filling up. When it gets to level one or higher you can do a fancy maneuver to get behind an enemy plane and shoot it down.

I stuck with this strategy for a level and it worked pretty well.

Meanwhile my allies just flew around without a care in the world, but I suppose that makes sense in this universe. As a legendary pilot you can’t let computer controlled planes do all of the work.

In one animated cut scene a rival pilot sadly reminisced over battles since her skill wasn’t anywhere near the protagonist’s. She spoke in Japanese because the version I played was the Japanese build. Xseed is still working on localizing and dubbing Sky Crawlers with English voice acting. I asked if they were planning to keep the Japanese voice track in and that hasn’t been determined yet.

A representative from Xseed also assured me Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces will land in North America this holiday season even though they are working on a ton of other games.

The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces Preview: Guileless, But Not Innocent

500x_custom_1251497886863_PUB0613_M03_03.jpg

Everyone loves the Ace Combat games for their action-y flight simulation and normally fabulous graphics – both of which are selling points for The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces.

The other selling point for Sky Crawlers is its tie-in with a Japanese novel series of the same name. In this alternate-reality world where it's permanently World War II, a group of young fighter pilots do what fighter pilots do best: dogfight. This is why it confuses me that the game is called "Innocent Aces." To be an ace fighter pilot, you've got to shoot a lot of people down, right? How is that innocent?

What Is It?
Sky Crawlers is a flight simulation game for the Wii developed by Namco Bandai and Project Aces – the team behind the Ace Combat games. Players take the role of a rookie pilot, codenamed Lynx, and work their way up through the ranks of the Sky Crawler pilots.

What We Saw
I played through an early mission in the game where the main target was an enemy bomber plane. I set the control scheme to beginning and still managed to ram my plane into the target instead of successfully shooting it down. (he plays like crap)

How Far Along Is It?
The game is due out in the 2009 side of the holiday season.

What Needs Improvement?
There's No Multiplayer: Ace Combat 6 proved the multiplayer modes can in fact work in flight simulators – so why don't we get any in Sky Crawlers?

What Should Stay The Same?
Accessibility: Sky Crawlers' difficulty settings range from Beginner to Expert and they aren't kidding when they say "Expert." The multiple layers of difficulty open up the game to newcomers and challenge old hat Ace Combat fans alike; and the way that Beginner mode mostly keeps you from pitching out of control opens up the joy of a big empty sky through which to crawl – or plummet, if you dare try Expert.

Special Maneuvers: While flying a mission, a yellow circle appears on the mini-map. Keeping your plane within the circle fills a gauge that allows you to pull off special maneuvers during combat by pushing the Nunchuck's analog stick in one direction and pressing A. These special maneuvers will get you behind enemy planes for a perfect shot or get you out of trouble if you've got a bogey on your six – and they look pretty amazing.

It Felt Really, Really Good: Even on beginner mode, the flying controls in Sky Crawlers felt very intuitive and not at all like a Wii waggle fast. The Nunchuck (held in the right hand) functions as the actual plane joystick while the Wiimote acts as the throttle (tilt up to speed up and down to slow down). Overriding my natural inclination to button mash was a little difficult, but the Beginner controls were patient enough not to let me spiral out of control while I figured out how not to stall out. All in all, a very rewarding flight sim experience.

Final Thoughts
I'm not sure how much a gamer would be missing for not having seen the anime or read the books – but Sky Crawlers seems like a good fit for the Wii in terms of gameplay. Too bad about the multiplayer, though; flight sims aren't really great games for an audience and there's no other way anyone else could get into it while you're at the controls – unless they've seen the anime or read the books.

Entrevista:

Did Sony Pictures' decision to release The Sky Crawlers film here have any bearing on releasing Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces overseas?

Ken Berry:
Absolutely not. When we first started evaluating Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces, we just loved the gameplay. Most of us knew nothing about the anime movie and once we just tried the actual controls where you hold the Nunchuk in your right hand like a flight stick, we just knew that was a game that most American gamers could relate to.

Is Innocent Aces based on the movie, or does it take elements from the book series?

KB:
Actually, the game is sort of a lead-up to the movie, so it does include some of the back-story found in the books. Mamoru Oshii, director of the movie, and best known for The Ghost in the Shell, was consulted for the game and the game includes anime cutscenes. Sky Crawlers is an alternate history where the world has achieved peace, but because humans have become so accustomed to conflict, they manufacture war. These two corporations battle each other, and this endless war is shown kind of like 1984 as a way to satisfy the human need. And then there are these children who are created to fight and who seem like they can't be killed. They become intrigued with this one pilot who seems to be so much better than they are, and they want to know why.

Acabou de sair na América, Reviews...

Review Tech-Gaming:

Upon booting the title, perceptive players may immediately notice the game’s lineage. From the game’s gorgeous graphics, intuitive control schemes, and incorporation of a multitude of aircraft, it is clear that Sky Crawlers was developed by the Ace Combat team.

(...) A majority of the game’s eighteen missions throw successive waves of air and ground-based enemy targets at players but Sky Crawlers should maintain most players’ interest throughout its story campaign. Dog fights are pleasantly intimate, as Innocent Ace’s universe eschews the jet engines and lock-on missile prevalent throughout most sky skirmishers.

(...) Visually, Sky Crawlers is well detailed and moves with a fluidity exhibited by few Wii titles. Most of the amenities of Ace Combat series have been integrated into the title- from detailed assignment briefs to post-mission replies which can be saved and replayed later. The title’s texture work is equally commendable, as well-rendered aircraft soar through voluminous clouds and above meticulously created landscapes. Aficionados of the anime will enjoy the game’s cutscenes, which were produced by Production I.G- the same studio who worked on the film. Each post-mission cinematic is skillfully drawn, and illuminates essentials of the Sky Crawler universe.

(...) veterans of the Ace Combat series will find only a modest amount innovation in the game’s campaign. Most missions feel like a succession of heading in the direction of the red enemy locator, and then downing hostiles- with a handful of requisite escort missions. A greater selection of tactical depth- perhaps ordering teammates to take defensive positions or attack specific adversaries, would have helped alleviate this problem.

The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces is an easy title to recommend to any player craving some proficient aerial battles. Although the game’s campaign can be completed in an industrious afternoon, the disk’s $29.99 price and unlockables offset any issues with brevity.

Review Game Almighty:

The Wii has not exactly been lacking in aerial combat games since its launch, but you could say that it has been lacking in good, or perhaps great aviator sims. Blazing Angels, Heatseaker and WWII Aces have all been released (among other titles) over the past few years, but all of them have left aerial combat fans desiring something more.

(...) The good news is that if you’ve been patiently waiting for the right flight sim to fill your needs as a Wii owner, or if you’re just looking for more content after getting hooked on Wii Sports Resort’s Island Flyover mini-game, then look no further than XSEED’s The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces.

(...) The standard controls utilize the Wii remote and nunchuck in an unorthodox manner whereby you hold the nunchuck in your main hand and the remote in your secondary hand. The nunchuck itself steers the plane much like a flight stick, and the Wii remote acts as the throttle control, pushing the aircraft to full speed when held upright and maintaining cruising speed when held in a level position.

While the controls did take a moment to get used to, I quickly found myself enjoying this unique setup which I’m told is meant to more accurately demonstrate the controls of an actual plane. However, fans of classic controls can still opt for either a Classic Controller or GameCube pad.
