Wii Sports golf tips

The golf Target Practice training game in Wii Sports is for the perfectionist-sharpshooter in all of us. From the tee box, you will need to land 10 shots on one of two greens: one with a 100-point bull’s-eye and one with a 75-point bull’s-eye. Sure, the 75-point green is closer and easier to hit, but this isn’t about what comes easy to us in life. This is for the 1000-point glory!

But there’s another problem in reaching the 100-point green. As you progress through your Target Practice session, the wind picks up a bit, and then it starts coming at you from all directions, playing havoc with your shot. But never fear: There’s a way to cut through that wind. You’ll still need the touch for distance, but we’ll line up your shot for you.

Staying blue
For most shots, you’ll want to stay within the Power Meter for your strength of shot. If you swing too hard and the line goes from blue to red, the ball will drift from the centre – and therefore from the bull’s-eye. In this game, you get points based on where your ball lands, not where it ends up. So you need to shoot straight and perfectly measure your shot.

Easy 3
Your first three shots are free of wind – or have practically no wind. You want to walk away from here with 300 points. For each of these shots, you want your blue bar to be near the top of the meter (so about a 90% swing). If you walk away with 250 points after the first three shots, you’re still doing OK.

And then the wind came

Starting on the fourth shot, a bit of a wind picks up, affecting your accuracy and distance. The wind directional arrow comes in four colours: blue for light wind, purple for steady wind, pink for brisk wind and red for ‘hold on to your hat’. It also comes in several different varieties of direction: straight on, at your back and cross wind.

To adjust for the wind, you’ll need to aim your shot left or right with the Control Pad. For winds coming in from a diagonal direction, such as southeast and northwest, you’ll want to aim your shot one ‘click’ into the direction from which the wind is coming for each m/s of wind speed. So if the wind is coming in from the northwest at 5m/s, you click left 5 times on the Control Pad. For a wind coming directly from the east or west, you’ll want to adjust your shot 1.5 clicks to that direction for each m/s of wind. When that wind is blowing from the east at 10m/s, you’ll want to click right 15 times. (For winds straight on or at your back, you obviously don’t need to change your aim.)

Adjusting for distance
The above-mentioned techniques can get you close to the middle of the green, but you have to use more of a ‘feel’ when it comes to adjusting your shot strength to correct for the wind. The wind will not affect your shot distance as much when it blows from due east or west. If affects your shot more when a diagonal wind or a straight wind is involved.

The wind will mostly affect your distance if it’s blowing harder than 10m/s. When the wind is blowing this hard (or harder), you’ll need to hit the ball a little bit harder or softer (depending on the direction) than you normally would. Mostly, though, soft winds will not affect the distance of your shot. If you find yourself consistently hitting the meter between the last dot (75%) and the top, you should score big.

Dead red

When the wind direction arrow is red and the wind is howling in your face, you’ll need to grip it and rip it or you’ll never reach the 100% mark on the green.

You’ll need to swing the club hard enough to get it in the red, meaning the ball will drift left or right because of the over-swing. Here, you’ll need to know your own over-swing tendencies. When you over-swing, does the ball tend to drift to the right or left? You’ll need to correct for that with your aiming. When you over-swing, it’s best to go about five clicks in the opposite direction you think your ball will go.

We’re not saying that getting 100 points on each of the last two shots is luck, but sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

Make your divot mark

Now it’s time to head to the course. If you haven’t spent much time with the Training mini-games in Wii Sports, you may not see the golf target practice game as it’s the last one you unlock of the three golf competitions. That just means you’ll need to play the other two once to access the Target Practice. And remember, it doesn’t take 1000 points to get a gold medal in Wii Sports golf, but 1000 makes you a legend.

wii sports perdido...
