Final Fantasy IV Sequel Coming to Western Shores... On the Wii...?

Final Fantasy IV: The After could be making it's way to Western Shores according to several sources close to Square-Enix.

For some time now there has been a buzz that The After, a direct sequel to Final Fantasy IV following the son of Cecil and Rosa - Ceodore - would be making its way to Western Final Fantasy fans in some way, shape or form.

In Japan The After is a mobile phone game released in episodes, and sees most of the cast of the original Final Fantasy IV return to assist the new characters. The game takes place some time after the original, and makes use of the tweaked engine from Final Fantasy IV Advance.

The game features a 'band' ability which allows characters to join together for more powerful attacks, similar to twin magic in the original.

The buzz surrounding The After has been reignited by comments by Producer Takashi Tokita, also responsible for most of the FF4 universe games - FF4, FF4Advance, FF4 DS and the After. When asked by a fan if they would ever remake FF4 -again- for next gen consoles, Tokita replied:

"We just remade it, so it's a bit of a stretch... [Laughs] Currently the sequel, FINAL FANTASY IV the After: Tsuki no Kikan is available for mobile phones in Japan. We'll do our best to make this game available for our overseas audiences as well!

These comments made us take action, and we've since been in contact with several sources at Square-Enix. Our gut feeling was that these games running on a GBA engine would be perfect for the DS - but our sources indicate that the remake will not be for a handheld console, but in fact for the Nintendo Wii.

It's evident from Tokita's comments that an announcement is coming. Based on the word of our insiders, could the episodic mobile game be coming to Wii Ware, retaining it's episodic format? We'll bring more as we get it.

FFIV Sequel Coming Here As Final Fantasy IV: The After Years?

We mentioned Final Fantasy IV: The After here many times. Always with an undercurrent of disappointment since the direct sequel to Final Fantasy IV is a Japan-only mobile phone game. Recently, Square Enix found ways to bring their mobile phone games outside of Japan. Crystal Defenders came out for the iPhone and is being retooled into an WiiWare/XBLA/PSN game. This happened a few months after we discovered a trademark for Crystal Defenders.

On the European Patent and Trademark database I found a trademark for “The After Years” registered by Square Enix. While this isn’t 100% related to Final Fantasy IV: The After, it sure sounds like an alternate and better worded international subtitle.

What do you think? Is the rest of the world going to learn the fate of Kain and meet Prince Ceodore?

Update: This news is for the US too. Square Enix registered “The After Years” here too.

EDIT: Ainda mais lenha:

FFIV: The After Years for WiiWare

It seems like the Japan-only mobile game FFIV: The After will head to download networks with a recent listing on the European Patent and Trademark database. Although not listed in its entirety, the trademark title is "The After Years".

Square-Enix European division recently told us that it would make an appearance on WiiWare, so here's hoping for more Final Fantasy treats worldwide.

Basicamente confirmado:

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years Coming To Wii

Square Enix will release Final Fantasy IV: The After, a direct sequel to Final Fantasy IV, in North America under the name Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. The ESRB spilled the surprise rating Final Fantasy IV: The After Years for Wii with an E rating and gave this description.

ffivafterESRB.png

This is a 2D role-playing game in which players embark on an adventure involving magical crystals and a mysterious kingdom. Players traverse across a field map or through dungeons and can enter into turn-based battles along the way. Players use a menu screen to select attacks or magic spells against tiny enemies (e.g., leopards, birds, knights, fish monsters, etc.) that blink and disappear when defeated. An item called “Bacchus Wine” is occasionally used to defeat enemies in battle.

Since all we have is a rating we don’t know if Final Fantasy IV: The After Years will be a retail release or if Square Enix will release the game in downloadable parts via WiiWare, similar to how the original mobile phone version was distributed in Japan.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years features Cecil, Rosa, and the entire cast of Final Fantasy IV years in the future. The story begins with their son Ceodore and introduces new characters like a brigade of ninjas under the command of Edge who is now the King of Eblan.

É uma sequela, exactamente como o return to the moon?

Está engraçado graficamente - vamos a ver o resto. O nome Final Fantasy IV carrega algum fardo.
_____

O jogo tem multiplayer:

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years to feature four-player multiplayer

ffivmulti.png

The official Final Fantasy IV: The After Years site is live. Siliconera spotted something quite interesting in the game's features page -- support for four player multiplayer? Interesting. Seems as though you won't have to play Square Enix's upcoming WiiWare RPG alone.

We contacted Square Enix for more information, and Klee Kluo clarified:

The game has multiplayer function during battles only, similar to the original Final Fantasy IV. Up to four players can participate in battles by connecting the appropriate number of Wii Remotes or Classic Controllers and assign them to the characters.

It seems like a neat addition for The After Years, but we're not entirely sure if our friends would want to take such a passive role and engage only in battles. Perhaps it's still best to play The After Years the way it was meant to be played, as a single-player experience.
