Press release:

Sharpen your weapons: “Swords & Soldiers” is coming!

Ronimo Games announces their studio and the first competitive strategy game for Wii Ware: Swords & Soldiers.

UTRECHT, THE NETHERLANDS – August 15, 2008 – The developers of the original version of “de Blob” announce their new game studio Ronimo Games and their first title: Swords & Soldiers.

Ronimo Games is founded by seven developers in Utrecht, the Netherlands. As students the team was responsible for the original pc game “de Blob”. Being an innovative and fun game, “de Blob” became popular on the internet and was eventually picked up by THQ. The publisher bought the IP and will soon release the new version of “de Blob” for Nintendo Wii.

Fabian Akker, one of the co-founders: “de Blob was the eye opener for us, that we can make cool games and function as a good team. The game definitely gave us the opportunity to start our own company”.

The team is developing a new game for Wii Ware: Swords & Soldiers. Swords & Soldiers is a sidescrolling real time strategy game, in which three distinct factions battle for the powers of the gods. The game will feature a single player campaign and a competitive splitscreen multiplayer mode as well as several other game modes. Three screenshots are included with this press release.
Akker: “We always dreamed of designing an RTS and when Wii Ware came out we immediately figured that this was our chance.”

Swords & Soldiers will be the first competitive strategy game on Wii Ware and is scheduled for European, Australian and American release in Q4 2008

Quando vai sair? Ali diz Q4 2008... se não for esta 6ª agora só para o ano.

Gostei muito do trailer, aqueles bonecos fazem-me lembrar alguns do Z&W.. curioso! Seja como for um RTS side scroller? Nunca tinha visto...

Scheduling change for Swords & Soldiers

Attention, fans of de original PC de Blob project: Ronimo Games' Joost van Dongen can be heard in the (rather meandering) Hear Mii podcast, in a very long interview. Unfortunately, that lengthy discussion contains a bit of bad news: his company's fantastic-looking WiiWare RTS Swords & Soldiers will slip from its original Q4 2008 date (there aren't that many dates left in Q4 2008!) to February of next year.

Entrevista:

I was very recently invited by the people at Romino Games to head down to their studios and test their new upcoming WiiWare game, Swords & Soldiers.

From the first minute I spent with this game, I was absolutely thrilled with what I saw. I didn't realise that this type of gameplay even possible on the WiiWare; it really felt like a fresh experience on the Wii with plenty to explore along the way. The battle system works just fine, and there was lots of fast, continuous action on the screen. The gameplay was challenging, quick, and most importantly, fun.

It was overall a great experience that day and towards the end of my day out I conducted an interview with Ronimo about their debut game. Enjoy!

I must say, Swords & Soldiers is a simple yet very catchy title! Could you explain to us what it is?

Fabian Akker:
It’s a 2D sidescrolling RTS game that will be released on the WiiWare service this year.

How were you inspired to create Swords & Soldiers?

FA:
We were inspired by an animation short called Super Moine. The animation is simply about fighting monks, and after watching it we decided it would fit in well with a RTS style of gameplay.

How long has it been in development for?

FA:
We started developing Swords & Soldiers in June 2008.

How many people are working on Swords & Soldiers?

FA:
12 people.

The game sees two rival factions fighting each other to the death – would you describe it as a 2D, more light-hearted take on more serious games such as Lord of the Rings: Battle For Middle Earth on the PC?

FA:
If you could see this as a parody of something, we would say Age of Empires. Besides that we’re trying to be original as possible and as serious as possible.

What is the actual goal of Swords & Soldiers, and how will we achieve this?

FA:
Each group is searching in the campaign mode for one particular item, but for the rest of the game fighting is the real main subject.

How many factions will be available to us in the final game?

FA:
It will contain 3 playable groups, including the Vikings, the Aztecs and a new one that will be announced soon.

How many different modes are there, and what are they?

FA:
Well, there will be 4 modes to play:

- Campaign - 10 levels for every group
- Skirmish
- Multiplayer
- 3 Challenges in the Challenge Mode

There's also multi-player splitscreen, which speaks for itself. Do you see this mode rivalling the likes of Super Smash Bros. Brawl in terms of consuming free time and destroying friendships?

FA:
Definitely yes!

Although I was convinced to buy the game off the bat, there are people that want to be able to play in multiplayer online as well as offline...

FA:
We wanted that as well, but we don’t have the resources right now. If there's ever gonna be a sequel to the game, we will try. Still, it's hard to do!

Why did you choose WiiWare as opposed to another PC project, or another distribution service?

FA:
It's easy, development takes less time, we have a license and the game just fits great on the Wii! Need we say more?

Swords & Soldiers was unfortunately delayed from 2008, why is this?

FA:
We delayed it so that we could proudly send the finished version to Nintendo. We want it to be good, and in regards to the delay we had no choice if we wanted to achieve that. We want you as the player to have the best experience possible.

What is your target release date for Swords & Soldiers now?

FA:
We hope by the end of February 2009.

Have you decided on a price point for the game yet?

FA:
We can only say at this particular time that it will be less than 1,000 Wii Points. We can only be sure when Nintendo gives us some feedback on the price.

How many system blocks will it take up?

FA:
It won't be much, we think it'll take around 120 blocks on your Wii memory.

Have Nintendo discussed their upcoming SD card storage solution with you yet?

FA:
We have heard about it, but nothing more really.

Is your goal with Romino games to make WiiWare audience familiar with new genres?

FA:
No, we just want to be creative, stand out in the crowd. If people are introduced to new genres that would be great, but it isn't our primary purpose.

Which genres do you think are best suited to the WiiWare service?

FA:
RTS games, of course! Why didn’t they try this sooner?

You also worked on the graphics for the WiiWare game Potpourri. Would you like to continue helping out on other smaller projects?

FA:
We could do, but we don’t have any requests at the moment. If somebody asked us, we can always consider. Still, we like producing our own games a lot more.

De Blob has been very well received both critically and commercially around the world. Are you proud of your creation?

FA:
Yeah, we are really proud of our creation. We earned a lot from it including of course a Nintendo license, the studio and a lot of free De Blob stuff.

Do you have any regrets about selling the franchise rights to THQ?

FA:
No regrets at all! We are very happy that it did so great all over the world.

Are abstract visuals the way to go with WiiWare given the system's technical limits, or is the potential for more realism there?

FA:
There is a potential for realistic games but abstract is the way to go if you want to make a great WiiWare game. The WiiWare audience is the demographic for abstract gameplay, because they're not searching for realism, but fun gameplay.

Which Wii or DS games are you playing at the moment?

FA:
Uhmmm... Mario Kart on the Wii most of the time.

What would you like to say to fans that are looking forward to the game?

FA:
It will be worth the wait! Over 50 people have tested it so far and everyone enjoyed it. So, we hope that you all pick up the game when it launches on the WiiWare service!

Swords and Soldiers, Historically Inaccurate Strategy for WiiWare

sns1.jpg

Simple game mechanics and a brilliant sense of humor are the driving forces behind Swords and Soldiers, an upcoming side-scrolling, real-time strategy game for WiiWare.

You'll be forgiven if you haven't heard of developer Ronimo Games, but you may have played their work: The group of students from Utrecht University in the Netherlands created de Blob, an Independent Games Festival finalist that eventually became a full-blown Wii game from THQ.

Swords and Soldiers pits three ancient civilizations against one another in an implausible series of historically inaccurate campaigns, challenging players to juggle light resource management and timing in what is shaping up to be a fun strategy experience.

Swords and Soldiers follows your typical real-time strategy rules. Each race has four combat units, and a resource gatherer who will mine the gold you need to buy troops. Your soldiers will march towards the enemy on their own, so the bulk of the strategic planning is pretty much centered around launching the right units at the right time.
Consider the Viking Frost Hammer. This wee warrior is armed with a massive mallet, and his slow, thunderous blow will cause nearby enemies to flinch. Stunned enemies will make the perfect targets for swarms of Axe Throwers, who work better in packs, at a distance.
While the Vikings rely on brute force, the Aztecs require a bit of ingenuity. Their primary unit is the Jaguar Warrior, who lacks armor, but is capable of leaping towards enemies. His attacks are perfect for closing the distance between vulnerable ranged attackers, slaying them for the Aztec Necromancer who raises corpses to create skeleton warriors. Undead soldiers are invulnerable, but will crumble to dust after a short while.

You'll also be able to fortify predetermined spots on the map. A tower icon will indicate a suitable location. For the Vikings, this means a fort for Axe Throwers to lob their munitions in relative safety. The Aztecs, on the other hand, get a tower that shoots laser beams from its eyes -- a defensive tactic I'm almost positive I read about in freshman World History.

Spells play an important role in combat, especially since you can't control your units directly. Players have a mana pool that regenerates over time, and spells are directed on to the battlefield by pointing at a target with the Wiimote.

The Viking's Rage spell will send a single unit charging across the screen in a crazed frenzy, sweeping up any comrades they encounter into a psychotic cloud of destruction. Once their fervor has run dry, the Viking Heal spell will call down heavenly light from Valhalla to get your troops back into shape.

On the Aztec side of things, a well timed Poison Bomb will cripple groups of enemies and sap their health -- perfect for countering swarms of ranged invaders. If those Viking thugs survive, you can always Sacrifice your own units to gain a bit more mana, and try again, or use the Mind Control spell to sow a bit of confusion into the battle.

There's a third race, but I'm not allowed to talk about them yet. Rest assured, their units are as varied and amusing as the rest.

There are 10 missions for each race in the single player campaign, and challenge modes that distort elements of the single player game.

The Viking's Berserker challenge, for example, will give you a single Viking warrior and an arsenal of random spells across all three races, with the goal being to see how long you can survive.

The Boulder challenge converts a powerful Aztec spell into a mini-game: a giant boulder careens across a map, and you have to hit the A button to have it hop over friendly Aztecs, while crushing as many Vikings as you can.

The real fun comes in the skirmish mode, which you can play against the AI, or split-screen with a friend. There's no online multi-player, unfortunately -- the game's developers are a very small group, and I was told that the number of additional hoops required to get Nintendo-certified multi-player into the game would be a monumental task for the one (1) programmer on Ronimo's team.

Ronimo says the game will be inexpensive, for a WiiWare title. Here's to that. Nintendo has not yet set a release date for Swords and Soldiers.
