Basically WiMax, but deemed ‘mobile’ because is lets users travel between base stations
without breaking signal, Mobile WiMax is expected to battle it out with 3G providers and even eventually wired ISPs for our on the go high speed broadband affection.
It hasn’t been a short journey to respectability though, original discussions began way back in December 2002 and some 12 drafts and 900 contributed documents were required before hands we shaken and backs heartily slapped. A whopping 684 pages spells out every detail of Mobile WiMax and all so we punters can watch a device in action and say “cooooool”.
Now IEEE approval isn’t mandatory for a technology to come to market, but it does give it greater acceptability which is often seen as vital when trying to garner fledgling support. Consequently, we can expect to see mass production of 802.16e (as it is also known) devices early next year, with market availability perhaps a smidgen prior to 2007.
Developers call Mobile WiMax a giant leap towards: “AOE” (Anywhere on Earth) Internet access. So I think I speak for every geek on Earth when I say: Top Banana!
