To our dismay, the ASUS EAX1950PRO does not come with the CrossFire bridge, which is supposed to ship with every Radeon X1950 PRO. The idea was when you acquire a pair, you would get the two bridges as well (one from each card) and you could have the internal CrossFire solution up and running. According to ASUS, the reason is that the company is offering a 'CrossFire Edition' package that will immediately provide two of the bridges, along with an enhanced bundle and feature set. This idea works to ASUS' advantage since they can ship a leaner package with the standard cards (which we'll get to that later) and pass the savings on to users. However, this also creates a dependency to be anchored to ASUS for your second graphics card if you decide CrossFire them. We suppose consumers could go out and purchase the connector themselves if they want to mix and match cards, but it does seem like a disservice to the consumer. ASUS may change this policy to have just one standard SKU, but there's no word about that at the time of publishing.
The presence of a 'premium' Radeon X1950 PRO edition from ASUS was also probably why unlike the PowerColor Radeon X1950 PRO, this card did not come with a Rage Theater ASIC that would have given it VIVO functionality. As VIVO is not a standard feature in the Radeon X1950 PRO, vendors can choose to exclude it at their own discretion and we believe that ASUS must be holding it back for the presumably more expensive 'CrossFire edition'.
Using ATI's own Overdrive utility in its Catalyst Control Center, we maxed out the clock speeds on the Radeon X1950 PRO. That turned out to be 621MHz for the core and 1590MHz DDR for the memory. It wasn't much but we were restricted by the Overdrive tool.
Unfortunately the beta Catalyst 6.8 driver that came with this card did not allow us to verify temperatures of the card and also, we could not overclock to see what the additional potential here is. I hope to bring you some results once the drivers are final.
We overclocked the PowerColor Radeon X1950 Pro using ATITool 0.25 beta 14, which comes complete with support for the Radeon X1950 Pro. First, we had a play with ATI’s Overdrive utility, built into the Catalyst Control Center – we didn’t get much further than we did with the Sapphire Radeon X1950 Pro, so we went in search of a better utility. Our overclocking experiments should be sufficient to give you an idea how far Radeon X1950 Pro should overclock. As always though, overclocking mileage may vary in your own experiences and we cannot guarantee that this Radeon X1950 Pro isn’t a particularly good overclocker.
The stock clocks for PowerColor’s Radeon X1950 Pro are 595MHz for the core, and 1390MHz on the memory. After overclocking, we managed to attain a stable and artifact free 632MHz core speed and a 1580MHz memory clock. When we set the memory clock above 1580MHz, we were greeted with artifacts and hard locking in games like Oblivion and Half-Life 2: Lost Coast.
