Hyrule’s First King is mentioned in The Adventure of Link and The Minish Cap. Gustaf I used his power, wisdom, and courage to bring peace and order to all the races of Hyrule. In honor of the Picori’s assistance, Gustaf I creates a national holiday known as the Picori Festival. As he wanes in age however, he begins to worry about who will inherit the Triforce upon his death. Deciding that it would be too risky to give the entire Triforce to his son, Gustaf I consults his wisest counselor, Rauru. He tells Rauru that he would like to create a method of hiding the Triforce. In the end, the Temple of Light (a.k.a. the Temple of Time) is built as an entrance to the Sacred Realm, where Gustaf I places the Triforce of Power. Then, to seal the entrance, Gustaf I commissions a blade called the Master Sword that only those of pure heart can touch. As a final precaution, the heart of the Temple is sealed with the keys each going to the separate races of Hyrule: the Kokiri’s Emerald, the Goron’s Ruby, the Zora’s Sapphire, and the Ocarina of Time, the latter remaining in the house of the Royal Family. For hiding the Triforce of Courage, Gustaf I approaches the leader of the Sheikah. The two of them decide to hide it outside of the kingdom, constructing six monuments across the Northern and Eastern Provinces of Hyrule, finally hiding the Triforce of Courage in a Palace of Gold. The keys and secrets to the structures are left with the Sheikah. Following this gesture of trust, the Sheikah appoint a maid to watch over Gustaf I’s daughter, Zelda. Several years later, Gustaf I succumbs to overwork and old age, but not before telling his daughter of the hidden Triforce pieces.
The Legend of Zelda is told in The Adventure of Link. After the death of Gustaf I, the Prince, who was to inherit the kingdom, found himself the new possessor of the Triforce of Wisdom. However, the Prince desired all three pieces of the Triforce. Consulting his mentor, who was a wizard, the Prince learned that his sister Zelda knew the location of the pieces. He immediately questioned her, but she refused to tell. Furious, the wizard threatens Zelda’s life. Before the Prince can stop him, the wizard puts Zelda in a deep sleep, dying himself in the process. Grief-stricken, the Prince places his sister in a palace of white in the Northern Province. He then decrees that all females born into the Royal Family from this point on shall be named Zelda. This, according to tales passed down generations, is the Legend of Zelda.
