JM9271 GPU to counter GeForce GTX 1080 in China

More than 2 years after the first announcement, Jingjia MIcro announces its NVIDIA GTX 1080 equivalent of GPU tapes out and finishes its packing process.

The JM9 series tapeout has been completed, according to an official statement by the company. This is the same GPU series that we have learned about 2 years ago when a relatively unknown company outside of the Chinese domestic market made a sudden announcement of their own GPU development.

On September 14 , Jingjiawei, a domestic GPU chip company, issued an announcement stating that the company’s new-generation graphics processing chip has completed the tapeout and packaging phases. The product has not yet completed the test work, and has not yet formed mass production and external sales, and will not affect the company. The current performance has a greater impact, and the degree of impact on the company’s future performance is still unpredictable.

One should mention that Jingjia Micro had plans to launch the GPU series already by end of 2020, but the development had clearly encountered problems. Nearly a year after originally expected availability, the JM9 GPU series has finally reached the final stage of production, which does not necessarily mean mass production.

The JM9 GPU series feature two GPUs. The JM9231 is an entry-level GPU that has performance comparable to GeForce GTX 1050 in official statistics. The GPU is to offer above 1.5 GHz of GPU clock, PCIe Gen3 x16 interface, 8GB of GDDR5 memory, and full compatibility with HDMI2.0 and DisplayPort 1.3. All this combined within 150W TDP. The company expects 2 TFLOPS of performance on this GPU.

A higher-end GPU called JM9271 is a 1.8 GHz model with PCIe Gen4 x16 support. Unlike the JM9231, the 9271 will feature 16GB of HBM memory, greatly improving memory efficiency, but also increasing the production complexity and cost. This GPU is to offer 8 TFLOPS of single-precision compute performance which is less than GTX 1080 8.9 TFLOPS.

The number provided by JM are estimates of computing performance, not comparable to gaming performance. In fact, the JM9 series do not even support DirectX or Vulkan API, reducing its use in the gaming space. Thus, the JM9 should not be considered gaming GPUs.
