Lest you thought Nokia had turned an entirely new leaf and shifted over to capacitive touchscreens for its finger-friendly handsets, the new Nokia C5-03 ruins that reputation by using a 3.2-inch 640 x 360 resistive panel. Still, that’s because this budget device is altogether more modest in its ambitions: it runs Symbian^1 (i.e. S60 5th Edition) and has a 5-megapixel camera.
You also don’t get the five-band HSPA of the N8 and C7, with the C5-03 having quadband GSM/EDGE and triband WCDMA (900/1900/2100). There’s also WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, A-GPS and a microUSB port, an FM radio (but no FM transmitter) and a microSD slot okay with up to 16GB cards.
There’s Ovi Mail, Ovi Maps and Ovi Store access, of course, and decent battery life too: up to 11.5hrs talktime or 25 days standby. Whether that – and the estimated €170 pre-tax and pre-subsidy price tag – will leave it sufficiently compelling is something we’ll have to wait and see about when it launches globally at the end of the year.
