Release: 6 Jun, 2017

Motorsport by its very nature is dangerous. DiRT 4 is all about embracing that danger. It’s about the thrill, exhilaration and adrenaline that is absolutely vital to off-road racing. And more than that, it’s about loving that feeling. It’s about pushing flat out next to a sheer cliff drop. Going for the gap that’s slightly too small. Seeing how much air you can get in a truck. They call it ‘being fearless’.

DiRT 4 also features a game-changing system called Your Stage; an innovative rally route creation tool that allows you to produce an almost-infinite number of unique stages at the press of a button. You choose your location and set the route parameters, then Your Stage does the hard work to create a unique rally stage that you can race, share with your friends and then challenge them to beat your time. Your Stage allows experienced rally players to create longer, more technical routes, whilst newcomers can create simpler shorter routes as they hone their skills.

With DiRT 4, Codemasters have sought to combine the levels of thrill and realism from last year’s DiRT Rally with the fearless excitement, accessibility and adrenaline-fuelled races previously seen in its critically acclaimed prequels DiRT 2 and DiRT 3.

Featuring classic rally racing that continues to build on the foundations set by the Colin McRae Rally games, the bruising contests from the official FIA World Rallycross Championship, the crazy battles of racing trucks and buggies, and the outrageous fun of open events in Joyride, players will face challenges from locations that span three continents.

• OVER 50 OF THE MOST BREATH-TAKING OFF-ROAD CARS EVER BUILT – Including Ford Fiesta R5, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI, Subaru WRX STI NR4 and Audi Sport quattro S1 E2

• 5 INCREDIBLE RALLY LOCATIONS WITH MILLIONS OF ROUTES – Australia, Spain, Michigan, Sweden & Wales

• THE OFFICIAL GAME OF THE FIA WORLD RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP – Race at Montalegre, Lohéac Bretagne, Hell, Holjes & Lydden Hill in a multitude of different series

• LANDRUSH – Short-course dirt track racing in Pro Buggies, Pro-2 Trucks, Pro-4 Trucks and Crosskart vehicles in California, Nevada and Mexico

• JOYRIDE - Laptime challenges, smash challenges, free-play area and send challenges to friends

• DiRT ACADEMY – Taking place at the DirtFish Rally School in Washington, USA, learn the skills, techniques and practice to become the best!

• CAREER MODE – create your driver, compete across the disciplines, gain sponsors and build your team with clear goals and rewards

• COMPETITIVE GAMING – Daily, weekly and month-long challenges against fellow players from around the world

• NEXT GENERATION OF RACENET – Live ladder, leagues and tournaments, cross-platform leaderboards, enhanced CREST telemetry system

• TUNING – Tweak your set-up based on vehicle, track and weather conditions to best suit your racing style

• DAMAGE & REPAIRS – Wear and tear is faithfully recreated with an improved and realistic damage model. Damage can be repaired by hiring Engineers to work in the team’s Service Area between stages but with a finite amount of time available.

Your Stage allows you to produce a near infinite number of unique stages at the touch of a button in DiRT 4. Just select one of the five rally locations from within the game (Australia, Spain, Michigan, Sweden & Wales) and set the time of day and weather conditions. You adjust the route’s length and complexity using sliders before generating your own completely unique stage. If you are not happy with it, just press Generate again and create another. You can then race, share and challenge your friends to take on your bespoke stage

How "Your Stage" Will Work in DiRT 4's Career Mode

One of the most promising features of DiRT 4 is the Your Stage feature, an in-depth track creation tool that players will be able to take advantage of. Codemasters has used the latest iteration of its “Road Book” blog series to tackle this topic and why the team is confident that the tool can deliver worthwhile rally tracks.

The Your Stage tool isn’t a new feature in the racing genre by any means: track creation has appeared in various titles over the years, including the PS3-era Gran Turismo titles. Codies believes that its version of the tool stands apart from the rest and funnily enough the reason for this is one simple addition: the ability to add straight sections to the rally tracks.

Jason Evans, Lead Technical Director at Codemasters, explains that the ability to create multiple straight sections that vary in length allow each track to push the fearlessness of the driver. Rally is an inherently complex motorsport but the true mettle of the player will be tested when trying to approach these areas at a high speed. A straightaway could make up valuable seconds in your trial time or cost you the event due to underestimating the difficulty of driving fast off-road.

The caveat with Your Stage is that the game will feature no pre-defined tracks on launch, and Dirt 4‘s career mode will consist of tracks generated by the tool.

Any doubt so far about the tool hasn’t stemmed from it’s ability to create compelling tracks but the worry that it isn’t strong enough to support the entire career mode of the title. Evans believes players shouldn’t fret about this aspect.

As expected, overall track length can be changed as required but Evans cites the complexity options as the true ace feature that sets Your Stage apart from the rest. Corner severity, camber, width, undulation and more can be tweaked by the player (and the team) to offer interesting and challenging drives.

Given that the title is relying on this feature, this was a given. The most interesting comment made by Evans is how each location in the game will still be made to feel unique even with generated tracks being used.

Generally in racing games, each country you drive in will offer a very distinct driving challenge. Developers make sure of this in order to capture each country’s flavor of rallying. Your Stage will not skimp on this according to Evans, as it will make use of specific rule-sets attributed to each country in order to maintain the atmosphere each locale should provide.

The track composition won’t be totally random and the location of the event will play a big part in the stages created. This is encouraging to hear.

The blog post tackles some other points about DiRT 4 so it’s worth a read for those eager for anything DiRT-related. The look into Your Stage is the most interesting section in this week’s blog, however. We’ll be able to see for ourselves how well Your Stage works in career mode when the game launches on June 9.

Learn More About the Two Handling Modes of DiRT 4

We’re now in the final month before DiRT 4‘s launch. With the game fast approaching, Codemasters has released another Road Book detailing the game’s two handling modes.

That’s right — unlike DiRT Rally’s approach of making players deal with its steep learning curve, the new DiRT game will offer drivers two handling modes: Gamer and Simulation.

Simulation mode in DiRT 4 is based off of DiRT Rally’s advanced handling model, but with even more improvements. Aerodynamics and tarmac simulation, for example, are two of the areas Codemasters worked on.

The team hasn’t given much information on the exact difference between the handling modes. What we do know, though, is that Gamer mode is not simply the assists-enabled version of Simulation mode. The same assists can be turned on in both handling modes.

Speaking of assists, the typical real-world-based assists will be making their way to DiRT 4, along with the developer’s own assists. The new Off-Throttle Braking assist does exactly what it says: activate the brakes once the player lets-off the gas pedal. Its strength is also adjustable, offering varying levels of assistance.

The Codemasters Blog claims both Gamer and Simulation handling modes will provide plenty of challenges to players, so we’ll have to see how true that statement is once the game releases June 9.
