From the getgo, the PlayStation 3, from a technical standpoint, has been a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. One of the more public mysteries has been the perceived lack of a built-in hardware scaler, which would allow games to be easily scaled to various resolutions as with the Xbox 360. Well, thanks to a little official PlayStation 3 software development kit update, and the band of merry tech sleuths at Beyond3D, we finally have some answers.
As long rumored, the PS3 actually has a hardware scaler, and it looks like Sony is now allowing developers the ability to use it to an extent. Why it was "hidden", and why it is only partially available is still officially unknown. But more and more rumors have been suggesting that there are a number of fixes coming for everything from the lack of proper 1080i scaling for games like Resistance, to the Blu-ray 720p playback issues. For those affected by such issues, it looks like good news is indeed coming. Beyond3D's article is a bit technical, but it does a great job in explaining the issue and how they suspect Sony may be fixing the PS3's known video rendering issues.
