Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 is official with bigger screens, new hideaway hinge

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 is finally official and it's better than its predecessor in every way.

Starting with the screen - the outside screen (which Samsung calls Cover screen) has grown from a bezel-ridden 4.6-inch to a 6.2-inch 2260x816px Super AMOLED that covers the entire front and sports a particularly tall 25:9 aspect.

Inside the main screen has seen a smaller increase - up from 7.3-inch, it's now a 7.6-inch 2208x1768px Dynamic AMOLED of 22.5:18 aspect ratio and adaptive 120Hz refresh rate.

The main display also now incorporates Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) for improved image quality and a more premium feel.

The hinge is another improved area now in its third-generation design. Samsung calls it a Hideaway hinge and it employs a CAM mechanism that enables the Galaxy Z Fold2 to stand on its own from 75 to 115 degrees.

Like on the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, there's a sweeper structure in the gap between the body and the hinge to keep dust and particles out and prevent damage with time. Samsung has also managed to make the gap even smaller than the Z Flip's.

Samsung will let you customize the hinge color in select markets with the choice of Metallic Silver, Metallic Gold, Metallic Red, and Metallic Blue.

When using the Galaxy Z Fold2 in Flex mode you'll be able to use certain apps in split view on the main screen. The camera, video call UI, the gallery, calendar, as well as partner apps like YouTube will be able to recognize the main display and show actionable content on the other portion of the screen.

Samsung has equipped the Galaxy Z Fold2 with a triple camera on its one non-screen side. The main is a 12MP f/1.8 sensor with dual pixel autofocus, optical image stabilization and 1.8µm-sized pixels. There's a 12MP telephoto camera that does 2x zoom with 1.0µm pixels and an f/2.4 lens that's optically-stabilized. The final sensor is a 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide with 1.12µm pixels and a 12mm angle of view.

There are two selfie cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold2 - one 10MP f/2.2 1.22µm is punched into the cover screen and another 10MP f/2.2 1.22µm inside the right half of the folding main screen. You can also use the cover screen as a viewfinder and snap yourself with any of the three main cameras.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 is powered by a Snapdragon 865+ with 12GB of RAM. There's 256GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage.

The battery has grown from the Galaxy Fold's 4,235mAh to 4,500mAh ad it supports 25W wired charging as well as fast wireless charging and wireless PowerShare.

Naturally there's support for 5G - both mmWave and sub-6GHz. Like the Galaxy Note20 Ultra, the Galaxy Z Fold2 comes with Ultra-Wideband for spatial awareness connectivity in which you can send files quickly from the Galaxy Z Fold2 to other Android devices.

gsmarena_009.jpg

Samsung is taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold2 beginning tomorrow and will ship the phone in around 40 markets from September 18. The sole 256GB version costs £1,799/€1,949/$1,999. The only market to get different storage is China, where the Galaxy Z Fold2 will be offered in 512GB flavor starting September 9.

You will get a choice of Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze while in 21 markets, including Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom and the US, you will be able to customize the hinge in Metallic Silver, Metallic Gold, Metallic Red and Metallic Blue accents.

There's a special Galaxy Z Fold2 Thom Browne Edition that's £2,999/$3,299 and comes with the Galaxy Buds Live and Galaxy Watch 3 starting September 25.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 to come with a new S Pen

After yesterday's Galaxy Fold 2 juicy news, it's time for another portion of revealing a bit more about the design of the handset. According to a fairly reputable source, Samsung's upcoming successor of the Fold will incorporate one of Galaxy Note's iconic features - the S Pen.

gsmarena_001.jpg

When you think about it, it does make a lot of sense. The Galaxy Fold 2 will reportedly open up to a 7.7-inch display, which is more than an inch bigger than the Galaxy Note10+, so it would be wasteful not to utilize that screen real estate with an S Pen functionality. Moreover, according to the leak, the S Pen will be re-designed. Perhaps the re-design is necessary due to the surface being more prone to scratches. And we still don't know whether Samsung will go with the UTG display or keep the plastic one from the old Fold.

https://twitter.com/MaxWinebach/status/1229398564830416896

The report also claims that the Fold 2 will borrow the S20+'s camera setup - 12MP main, 64MP telephoto, 12MP ultrawide and a 3D ToF sensor to aid them all. Interestingly, the display on the outer shell of the phone will have an Infinity-V panel - a minimalist notch, while the main display will go for either a punch-hole design or an under-screen camera. But we knew that already from yesterday's leak.

The handset will incorporate high-quality materials such as ceramic and stainless steel and will come in five colors - Blue, Silver, Gold, Pink and Black.

Galaxy Fold 2 rumor-based renders show a much cooler design

What you are about to see are rumor-based renders, so don't expect them to give you any new information. Instead they are meant to serve as visual aids and give you an idea of what the upcoming second generation foldable phone might look like.

gsmarena_003.jpg

The images reveal a familiar, yet improved design with bigger, notched secondary screen, a camera module borrowed from the current Galaxy S20 generation and a punch-hole camera design replacing the cutout on the current Galaxy Fold.

gsmarena_001.jpg

More importantly, the renders envision a folding design with a virtually non-existent gap when the handset is closed, which could be achieved given that the Galaxy Z Flip's new hinge.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G press renders leak

The oft-rumored, much-leaked Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G will finally become official during the company's online Unpacked event on August 5. While we wait for that, here are a bunch of just-outed, fresh out of the oven press renders showcasing it in all its glory in two colors - Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black.

gsmarena_002.jpg

As rumored countless times before, the inner screen now has a punch-hole selfie camera, and thus no more big, awkward side-notch. The outer screen is much improved too, now stretching to the edges and not coming with laughably huge top and bottom bezels like in the original Fold. This one also gets a hole-punch selfie cam.

gsmarena_004.jpg

The design of the rear camera island borrows heavily from what we've seen in leaked press renders of the Galaxy Note20, which should also be announced at the same event. The Mystic Bronze colorway is also shared.

gsmarena_003.jpg

According to previously leaked specs, the outer display will be 6.23", while the internal one grew to 7.7", both Super AMOLED of course. The internal screen will have 120Hz refresh rate too. The triple camera setup on the rear should comprise of 12 MP + 64 MP + 12 MP sensors, while the inner selfie cam is said to be 10 MP. The storage capacity will be 512GB, and 5G support is built-in. The total battery capacity comes in at 4,356 mAh, and it will support 15W wireless charging.

gsmarena_005.jpg

Pricing rumors have been all over the place, with some saying the Z Fold 2 5G would be cheaper than its predecessor, and others settling for $1,980, which is pretty much in line with the first-generation product. We'll find out for sure in just a few short days, so stay tuned.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 introduced: larger displays inside and out

Samsung didn’t fully unveil the Galaxy Z Fold2 but it did lift the cover a little bit so we can have a peek. Really, it focused on the two displays and even then it held back some details.

Larger 7.6" screen inside • 6.2" screen outside
gsmarena_001.jpg

gsmarena_002.jpg

The internal screen has grown to 7.6”, up from 7.3” on the original. Also, the display now incorporates Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) for improved image quality.

The external screen is much larger too – at 6.2” it covers the entire “front” when the Fold2 is folded. The aspect ratio is taller than most phones out there, but you can successfully use the Fold2 closed. Also, the “front”-facing camera and the internal cameras have both moved to punch holes.

There’s no mention of price just yet – even details like chipset, cameras, battery and so on are left for a later announcement scheduled for September 1. This is also the start date for the pre-orders.

XDA has additional info on the device, info that Samsung didn’t confirm in the livestream or in the press release. Still, here it goes.

The inner screen will have a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with 120 Hz refresh rate. The refresh rate is actually adaptable, it can be anything between 1 Hz and 120 Hz. There’s no S Pen support, despite some persistent rumors. The panel has 1,768 x 2,208 px resolution (5:4 aspect ratio). There’s no notch this time, instead the inside camera is in a punch hole. The bezels are thinner than on the original Fold to boot.

The outer display is a Super AMOLED with 60 Hz refresh rate. It’s quite tall, the 816 x 2,260 px resolution works out to 25:9 aspect ratio. Both inner and outer displays support HDR10+. The fingerprint reader is mounted on the side so that it’s accessible regardless of whether the phone is closed or open.

It shouldn’t surprise you that the Z Fold2 is powered by a Snapdragon 865+ chipset. It comes with 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM plus 256 GB storage. The phone features 5G connectivity, both sub-6 GHz and mmWave.

The triple camera on the back has the same makeup as before – three 12 MP sensors with different lenses. The main cam features OIS and an f/1.8 aperture and the sensor from the S20 – the one with 1.8μm pixels. The other two lenses are telephoto and ultra wide. Both front facing cameras have 10 MP sensors and f/2.2 fixed-focus lenses.

The battery has 4,500 mAh capacity and supports 25 W fast wired charging and 11 W wireless charging (plus reverse wireless charging).

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 will be available later this year. Samsung will sell two color versions – Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze – and Thom Browne is preparing a fashion-focused limited edition.

The new hinge borrows the "Flex Mode" idea from the Z Flip. This allows it to close part way, so that you can stand the phone up.

Samsung will let you customize the hinge cover when ordering the phone from Samsung.com (this will be available only in select regions). Normally, the cover matches the color of the phone, but you can pick Ruby Red, Rich Gold, Platinum Silver or Sapphire Blue.

Isto vale o que vale, mas começa a incomodar. Porque utilizam neste terminal o SD 865+ e não o Exynos 990?
Porquê esta diferença para por exemplo o Note 20?

Samsung finally announces Galaxy Z Fold 2 in full, here’s all you need to know
As you all know, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 was briefly showcased at Galaxy Unpacked 2020 in early August when Samsung teased a more in-depth announcement scheduled for September 1. August is now behind us and today was the day when the Galaxy Z Fold 2 finally got unwrapped and pushed onto Samsung’s virtual shelves for pre-order customers.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will have a pre-order window of a few weeks before it starts shipping to early adopters on September 18. Samsung claims that its latest foldable hybrid device will be released in around 40 markets including the USA, South Korea, and Europe. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne Edition is available for pre-order starting today until September 25.

Samsung is giving Galaxy Z Fold 2 customers the option to customize the color of the hinge, but this service will be available only in select markets (21 in total). Color options for the hinge include Metallic Blue, Metallic Gold, Metallic Red, and Metallic Silver. The phone itself will only be available in Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze, however.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne Edition will have its own unique color scheme featuring the Americana striping, and the retail package will include the smartphone itself as well as a pair of Galaxy Buds Live and the Galaxy Watch 3. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 2 will ship alongside a standard pair of wired AKG earbuds.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 specifications galore

Most of these specs will sound familiar thanks to previous leaks and rumors but they are now officially confirmed without a shadow of a doubt. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is powered by the Snapdragon 865+ chipset paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of UFS 3.1 built-in storage.

The new flexible Dynamic AMOLED 2X Display measures 7.6 inches in diagonal and has a pixel count of 2208 by 1768, as well as a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The cover display also got considerably larger and it now clocks in at a 6.2-inch diagonal. It has a resolution of 2260 by 816 but it’s limited to 60Hz.

Other specs include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, stereo speakers, an eSIM and one Nano SIM slot, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax, HE80 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and USB-C. All these components are powered by a 4,500mAh dual battery with 25W charging.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 new software features

The phone runs Android 10 paired with One UI 2.5, and it includes software features specific to the foldable form factor such as Flex Mode, Multi-Active Window, and Split Screen Capture.

Multi-Active Window was further improved and it now lets you run the same app in different windows simultaneously. Split Screen Capture was also added to Multi-Active Window and it allows users to capture screenshots of an app opened in Multi-Active Window instead of capturing all the contents on the screen. Screenshots can then be pasted into another app and resized or edited.

Flex Mode debuted with the Galaxy Z Flip but it’s a new addition to the Galaxy Fold series. It lets users turn the Galaxy Z Fold 2 into its own camera stand and it was made possible by the new hinge. Flex Mode is now accompanied by a new camera feature called Auto Framing. It leverages AI and the camera’s zoom capabilities to keep the main subject in the middle of the frame when the phone is still. Auto Framing works with the rear ultra-wide sensor and the selfie shooter; it has a tracking distance of 1.5-to-2.5 meters and it can track two subjects simultaneously.

Speaking of new camera features enabled by updated hardware, Dual Preview is now available when capturing photos with the main camera, turning the new cover display into a viewfinder. Subjects being photographed can show the palm of their hand to capture a timed selfie. The timer is shown on the cover display atop the viewfinder.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 camera specs

The back of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 accommodates three main cameras. There’s a 12MP wide-angle camera with an f/1.8 aperture, 1.8-micron pixels, 83 degrees FOV, Super Speed Dual Pixel Autofocus, and OIS. Then there’s the 12MP ultra-wide shooter with an f/2.2 aperture, 1.12um pixels, and 123 degrees FOV. Last but not least, the trio of sensors includes a 12MP telephoto lens with an f/2.4 aperture, 1.0um pixels, 45 degrees FOV, OIS, and PDAF. The setup is capable of HDR10+ recording, up to 2x optical zoom and up to 10x digital zoom.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 also features two selfie cameras, each with a resolution of 10MP, an f/2.2 aperture, 1.22um pixels, and 80 degrees FOV. One selfie camera is embedded within the cover display while the other resides in the flexible display’s Infinity-O cutout.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 represents some of the best mobile technologies money can buy right now. It’s a direct sequel to the original Galaxy Fold and it shows improvements in countless areas. It also got a special edition bundle, and the standard variant is expected to hit the shelves in a lot more countries than the original model did. All in all, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 seems to be a worthy evolutionary step and it spells great news for fans of Samsung’s foldable devices.

Uau... Eu já estava indeciso sobre o próximo smartphone... E meio zangado com a samsung por causa dos preços... Mas as primeiras impressões deste fold tão brutais..

2050€.
