Iizuka: We are Developing a Completely New [Sonic] Game

In an interview with Famitsu, the head of Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka has confirmed that sonic team are developing a new Sonic game.

Famitsu: Finally, our last question – please tell us about Sonic’s future.

Iizuka: We at Sonic Team – are developing a completely new game, as well as developing a full movie, actively done by Sony Pictures, and animation on Sonic Boom. We are also ready to improve sponsor ties.
The most important thing is not the fact the series survived for 25 years, but how many games was developed.
Our goal – add something new and overcome any potential hardships.

Are you as shocked as we are? That a new Sonic game is in development! Well… yeah cynical response aside, what’s interesting is the use of words here, specifically ‘completely new game’ suggesting it’s not a direct sequel or might actually be something new that we’ve not seen before.

Can't wait to see what is! :003:

New Game Hinted & Movie Producer Heading to the 25th Party

A couple of bits and pieces regarding tonight’s show here! First up, EuroDNS has hinted that there will indeed be a game revealed at tonight’s 25th anniversary party!

For those that don’t know, EuroDNS are a company responsible for registering domain names on behalf of other companies. Their clientele include some big names, especially for Europeans. As such, SEGA registering their new game website through them is within the realms of reality.

Secondly, Dmitri M. Johnson has confirmed his attendance at the party. Name doesn’t ring any bells? Dmitri is a co-producer on the Sonic movie that’s in the works right now! Whether this means we’ll get more movie news tonight as well remains to be seen.

Remember, the party starts at 6pm Pacific Time today. If you want to watch it, you can head to the official Sonic Twitch channel.

SEGA: Project Sonic 2017 Will Introduce A New Character And A New Gameplay "Component"

SEGA held a livestream event to celebrate the recent launch of Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice in Japan, with series director Takashi Iizuka in attendance among others playing the latest Boom instalment and the upcoming Sonic Mania. However, a pair of bombshells has dropped since the event, this time concerning the far-flung Project Sonic 2017 launching next holiday season.

With translations provided by Source Gaming’s PushDustIn, it is confirmed that SEGA has plans to reveal “a completely new character in Project 2017.” We also now have a better idea of the gameplay, which is expected to follow the formula established in Sonic Generations with classic 2D and modern 3D levels – however, a “brand new component” is also going to be introduced.

Project Sonic 2017 arrives late next year for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and the Nintendo Switch. Our own Hero of Legend has also given his thoughts about Sonic’s future on the recently revealed home console from Nintendo, so be sure to give that a read!

What are you hoping to see from this new and mysterious character? What kind of new twist on the gameplay do you wish to see? Share your thoughts and predictions with us in the comments section below.

New minor Project Sonic 2017 and Switch Version Details In Nintendo Dream Magazine

A scan popped up on Twitter today from Nintendo Dream magazine in Japan showing bits of info for both Sonic Mania and Project Sonic 2017 on Nintendo Switch. While nothing of note was said of Sonic Mania, we got a few small bits about Project Sonic 2017, but nothing mind-blowing.

Twitter user PushDustin has the issue on hand and was able to translate the info about Project Sonic 2017, below are what was said:

  • The Switch version is 1-player-only and supports “all kinds” of the Switch’s play modes, one specified naturally was “TV”, but other Switch modes (though not mentioned by PushDustin) are Tabletop-Mode and Portable mode. So far the latter two weren’t specified, but there’s no reason why this would not be the case for the game.
  • It’s an Action-Adventure game, but curiously it’s literally listed as a “cave exploring action adventure game”, but PushDustin notes not to take that literally.
  • You have to protect the world from devastation from Eggman’s Death Egg Robots using 2 Sonics.
  • Lastly, PushDustin just says “Sonic’s new adventure begins”.
As said, this is nothing mind-blowing, we’ll likely get our first major bits of info from the upcoming SXSW panel on March 16th for Project Sonic 2017.

Official Sonic Twitter Teases More Project 2017 Info To Be Revealed At SXSW

The official Sonic twitter account has shown off another teaser image, depicting the giant robots seen in the original trailer of Project Sonic 2017. The image was accompanied by the simple tease of “See you at @SXSWGaming!”.

The wait may soon be over as to when we’ll finally see what the game is about, and what to truly expect from it. Project 2017 was announced alongside Sonic Mania all the way back on July 22nd last year under the title, with little additional information having been revealed since. You can see the trailer right here:

Takashi Iizuka announced that the game would not be a sequel but rather a “new experience”, while still retaining the action/adventure format. We have sinced learned that the title will introduce a new character and a new gameplay component, as well as that the Switch version and possibly all other platform versions, will be a 1 Player-only game, and feature some of the Switch’s play modes.

The Sonic SXSW panel takes place on March 16th at 5PM CST/11PM GMT/6PM EST/3PM PST.

Project Sonic 2017 is scheduled to be released this holiday on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
