Chapter 1: Setting up the screen
You have gotten a manual with the screen hopefully, so read it and use it.
1. Connect the screen when computer is off, DVI gives best picture, but if your monitor have a native resolution above 1680x1050 and your graphic card only support single DVI, then use the VGA plug instead. This is bandwidth limitation of the DVI. Adjust the screen to a comfortable working angle. To find Position, Height & Viewing Distances this is a nice tool: viewing distance calculator
Turn on computer.
2. Install the proper drivers and color profiles. You can also download the newest version from the homepage of the manufacturer.
3. You might need to calibrate the screen. If you have some knowledge of this, then you can download calibration tools from our tools section. If not, here is an easy solution: Turn the brightness all the way down and the contrast in the middle (you can do this on the menu on the screen, the OSD, or go to control panel -> display ->settings tab ->advanced and find colors there (it differs where from different GFX cards). Now adjust brightness up to a comfortable level. Under the display settings (in control panel ->display..., not OSD) you can adjust gamma down a bit since the default settings are usually too high. Remember that the further you take gamma down, the more detail you loose in the picture.
Chapter 2: Everything is too small and I want back to 1024x768...
Many people who have high resolution displays use a lower resolution because everything is too small and not comfortable to read and look at. The windows operating system is made for lower resolutions by default. However, this can be changed...
1. Increase font size (DPI). By default, xp uses 96 DPI fonts. You can customize this, but try first to increase it to the other preset 120 DPI and work from there. To do this, you need to go to Display settings like before, then Settings ->advanced and under the general tab you can choose 120 dpi. Restart and see how it looks.
2. To make it look prettier, go to display settings -> appearance -> effects and turn on ClearType. Click ok and then choose Advanced. Here you can decrease the menu, message box, selected items and tooltip if you feel they are too big, but if you like it the way it is, then close the screen. You can also reduce title bars and controls and adjust icon spacing and scroll bar width to your liking. There is also an option to use large icons in the display settings ->appearance section if you want that.
3. Internet usage. Internet explorer is bad for high resolutions, you can fix this a bit with using this method to adjust it for the high dpi: link
A better thing is to install Opera or Firefox and change the minimum font size to a comfortable level.
