Two months ago, RaceSimCentral wrote about Need for Speed: Shift 2 Unleashed developer Slightly Mad Studios’ plans for a community funded sim racing project. According to VirtualR, that project finally has a name: Community Assisted Racing Sim, or C.A.R.S. for short.
Those following the development action in the NoGrip Racing forums know that the name may change, along with everything else about the project, once contracts are signed and entities invest money into the project. However, everyone has a chance in what stays or goes. The project will allow all fans to become investors; they will get a share of the profits, access to the development process, and a say in the title’s direction.
Interested parties can start investing in the next few weeks. The legal work behind the project is complete, and Slightly Mad is ready to launch the project’s website. For just 5€/$7, racers can have a vested interest in C.A.R.S.. All investors will get access to downloadable development builds throughout the process and have a say in how things are decided. However, there is an elite gold-level commitment of 1000€/$1400 that gives access to board meetings where “the bigger calls will be made,” reports VirtualR.
Gold members will reportedly get source-code access to C.A.R.S., while smaller investors will be given script access. C.A.R.S. will use a “stripped-down Shift 2 Unleashed engine” to begin with; the team will gradually add modules over a 12-month development cycle such as a “new DirectX 11 renderer, a new physics engine, and new AI.” Development builds will be distributed throughout that cycle.
Slightly Mad is planning to have licensed content in C.A.R.S., and that content will be added as licensing deals are finalized in later builds. The first build has no set date, but it should be distributed once Slightly Mad has secured a strong first round of investors.
