Back at the beginning of the month, Polyphony Digital released 124 new screenshots of Gran Turismo Sport. One specific image has caught the attention of our community, as GTPlanet members have been trying to unravel a mystery.
The image above seems normal enough at first glance. Once we have cropped the image to focus on the back group of cars however (and zoomed in), it becomes obvious the mysterious car peaking behind the black Peugeot 208 is an open-wheeler. But which one? It’s hard to tell considering the focus of the image is on the GT86 in the foreground. Likewise, the angle of the image doesn’t much help resolve the situation either.
The image raises so many questions because no open-wheelers have been announced or presented in GT Sport so far. Indeed, back in May after the Copper Box unveiling event, Kazunori Yamauchi told our friends at TeamVVV there would be no open-wheel racing in the game. While it wouldn’t be unusual for these type of vehicles to appear in the game from a historic sense (older GT titles had numerous open-wheel cars), it’s interesting the car has been spotted competing alongside Group N cars. It remains to be seen how the presence of open-wheel cars will be handled in GT Sport.
Our community has already started discussing what crazy machine this figure could present. If you’re interested in solving the problem, check out this thread. GTPlanet member Samus noticed the car’s front left tire seems to be linked to a yellow suspension arm; hopefully this detail will help us find out who exactly manufactured the car.

GT Sport will get its first public display of 2017 later this month, in its home country no less. Polyphony Digital recently posted the news on the official website, confirming the game’s presence at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon.
The event will mark the first time Japanese fans will get the chance to try the game both on PS4 Pro and with PlayStation VR. In the case of the former, it means witnessing the game in 4K resolution with HDR. With the latter, players will get a taste of the game’s “VR Tour Mode”.
While there’s nothing new mentioned in the (translated) news post, we’ll be keeping an eye out for any fresh details that emerge. After the game was pushed back to 2017, fans have been eager to get a more specific date from the developer.
The 2017 Tokyo Auto Salon runs January 13–15, at the Makuhari Messe in the Chiba Prefecture. The GT Sport demonstration booth will be located in Hall 4, section 2F.
Gran Turismo Sport is scheduled to arrive on the PlayStation 4 family of systems this year.
Amongst all the announcements, unveilings and showcases of the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Subaru brought along it’s record breaking WRX STI time-attack car. Piloted by Mark Higgins, the 600 bhp car shattered the the previous record — also set by Subaru — for the time set by a car on the Isle of Man TT circuit earlier last year.
Evident by his Instagram post, also there for the show was Polyphony Digital employee, Carter Jung. Mr. Jung didn’t speak much about his time at the auto show, instead keeping it to a sole post about the inclusion of the record-holding Subaru in a future Gran Turismo title.
"This guy holds the lap record at the #IsleOfManTT w/ a time of 17:35 and an average lap speed of 128.73 mph. The #GranTurismo stickers mean you'll be able to drive it in the game."
Jung stated that the existence of the Gran Turismo stickers clad on the aggressive bodywork of the car confirm it’s existence within ‘the’ game. Whether he is referring to Polyphony Digital’s upcoming 2017 title, Gran Turismo Sport, or potentially scoping towards games further into the distance is yet to be told.
It must be said that this is not the first time such a sponsorship has taken place by Polyphony Digital, with notable examples being of the 24 Hours of Nürburgring and Pikes Peak International Hill Climb both having Gran Turismosponsorship in common.
The relationship between Polyphony Digital and the 37.73-mile (60.72 km) Snaefell Mountain Course runs deeper than stickers on Higgins’ 2016 record-holder. Back in 2014, Polyphony Digital employees were spotted on the island, and a locals were advised a slow-moving service vehicles would be rounding the circuit over a two week period. The plot thickens…
With regards to the car itself, getting the seeming confirmation from an actual PD employee certainly piques our interest. We’ll be on the lookout for further proof of the car’s inclusion in the franchise.
One of the largest automotive shows in the world — the Tokyo Auto Salon — is currently in the middle of its 28th exhibition. Visitors attending the show will be able to try out GT Sport which, for the first time in Japan, will be playable on the PS4 Pro and with PS VR.
There are more surprises, however. Polyphony Digital recently announced on the Pit Stop blog the salon will host two special GT Sport stage events on both Saturday and Sunday, starring Super GT drivers. Both events will be broadcasted live on NicoNico website (registration required), so be sure to check the schedule below if you don’t want to miss anything:
- Ryuya Kataoka GT Sport Event – Saturday at 14:00 local time (Click to convert)
- Satoshi Motoyama GT Sport Event – Sunday at 13:30 local time (Click to convert)
In addition, a Time Attack challenge on Willow Spring Raceway is planned for regular players stopping by GT Sport demonstration booth located in Hall 4, section 2F. Prizes await top three fastest drivers.
The 2017 Tokyo Auto Salon will run until this Sunday, January 15, at the Makuhari Messe in the Chiba Prefecture.
Gran Turismo Sport was playable at the Taipei Game Show this past weekend—on the new PlayStation 4 Pro no less. While the build doesn’t appear to be much different from the one shown at the PlayStation Experience last December, it nonetheless shows us some new aspects of the game.
If you’ve been curious about the latest addition to the track roster—Willow Springs’ Horse Thief Mile—you’ll want to skip straight ahead to the 2:00 mark. With a pack of Gr.4 machines duking it out as the sun sets, Horse Thief Mile looks like quite the point-and-squirt challenge. The landscape also looks impressively detailed off-track.
In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it instance, we see the other Subarus in the video wrapped in slightly different liveries than the player car. Similarly, the VW Scirocco Gr.4 showed off a variety of different looks in a collection of images Polyphony released last month. Hints at what the new livery editor will be capable of?
The first half of the video sees the 2017 Nissan GT-R going around the comparatively-longer Brands Hatch Indy circuit alongside other pure road cars. Here, we get a better chance to hear the turbo V6 engine be put through its paces.
Listen closely, and it’s a meatier note than what has come before in GT games, signalling continued improvement in the sound department. It’s good to know the improvements we heard last year (Hellcat direct-audio capture, Mercedes-AMG direct-audio capture) weren’t isolated examples. The sound when cars make contact has changed too, though the tire squeal seems largely the same as it was in Gran Turismo 6.
Unfortunately, there is still no word on when we’ll be able to play Gran Turismo Sport in our own homes. Stay tuned for more news on the game as it comes in.
Hat tip to community member queleuleu for finding the video!
Gran Turismo Sport is scheduled for release on the PlayStation 4 at some point in 2017.
