10. Steel Battalion Controller (Xbox)

True, it may only work with one game – two if you count the now-defunct online counterpart Line of Contact – but the functionality of the Steel Battalion controller is unbelievable. It comes in a huge box and then folds out as a big dual-stick unit with dozens of buttons and a pair of foot pedals. It even comes with an "eject" button, in case you're not feeling confident in your robot's stability. If you still have an Xbox and $200, invest in this immediately – even if you need to set up a table in front of your television.

9. Nintendo WaveBird (GameCube)

Nintendo's WaveBird is a wireless rendition of its GameCube pad. Sure, the C-stick isn't the greatest, but the rest of the controller is comfortable. Best of all, the wireless functionality is great, not only working at a distance (up to over 20 feet) but also with utmost precision, thanks to its reliance on radio frequency rather than infrared sensors.

8. Dual Shock 2 (PlayStation 2)

Forget the lightweight SIXAXIS. Our favorite Sony controller is the Dual Shock 2. Not only does it feature lifelike rumbling, but it also has two comfortable analog sticks and pressure-sensitive buttons that read the difference between a tap and a press. Of course, Sony knows how awesome a controller this is – why do you think it went ahead with making the Dual Shock 3? Better late than never, we suppose.

7. NES Advantage (NES)

The original NES controller is spiffy, but Nintendo topped its own design with this sturdy, well-balanced controller. The joystick gives it an old school feeling similar to most older arcade games, the inclusion of turbo and slow-motion buttons (basically the game repeatedly pausing itself) are a nice touch and the buttons are actually easier to hit here, rather than small circles on an otherwise comfortable pad. We only wish that Nintendo were still working on this type of controller. A Wii-vantage stick for the classic games would surely end up in our next "best of controllers" list.

6. GunCon 2 (PlayStation 2)

Namco Bandai proved that it knows how to make an excellent gun game with its Point Blank and Time Crisis games. So what better way to back them up than with the most accurate shooting peripheral around? The GunCon 2 connects to both your PlayStation 2 game unit and television through the video jack, letting you shoot with pinpoint accuracy. The GunCon 3 packaged with Time Crisis 4 for the PlayStation 3 isn't bad, but we like the simplistic feel of GunCon 2 better.

5. Guitar Hero III Wireless Gibson Controller (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)

The original Guitar Hero controller is a rocking innovation in its own right, but Activision really nailed down the design of the wireless Gibson peripheral. Not only does it remove those bothersome wires, but its light weight and added comfort make it a pleasure to play with – unlike Harmonix's somewhat stiff Rock Band model. Let's hope the company has a killer encore in mind for Guitar Hero: World Tour. We humbly suggest an enhanced Stratocaster.

4. Sega Genesis Six-button Controller (Sega Genesis)

The original Sega Genesis controller isn't bad, with its three easy-to-press buttons and its decent D-pad. However, if you want to get the most out of the ol' system, your best bet is the improved six-button pad. It hit store shelves shortly after Acclaim's home port of Mortal Kombat arrived, giving fighting fans better handling over their characters. The d-pad is easier on the thumbs, there are six buttons rather than three, and best of all, there's a button that lets you go back to "classic" mode.

3. SNES Controller (Super Nintendo Entertainment System)

Nintendo strikes again with this enhanced, worthwhile 16-bit controller. Rather than just featuring two buttons and the "select" and "start" buttons like the original, Nintendo improves upon its own design with two additional face buttons, a more thumb-friendly d-pad and best of all, two shoulder buttons. These come in handy for other functions, like leaning into turns in a driving game or setting up strong attacks for those prolonged Street Fighter II sessions.

2. Logitech G25 Racing Wheel (PlayStation 3)

Is it expensive? You betcha. Does it only work with a handful of games? At the moment, yeah. Is it still worth dropping the money on? Absolutely. The G25 Racing Wheel is a far improved design over the original, with better handling over your vehicle, a refined dual Force Feedback transmission, authentic metallic foot pedals, F-1 paddles for better shifting capability, programmable buttons and a realistic-feeling stick shift. If you're any kind of driving fanatic, you need to own this sucker.

1. Xbox 360 Controller (Xbox 360)

How does a company go from creating one of the most nightmarish peripherals ever made (the fatty Xbox pad) to releasing the greatest controller ever conceived? Research, and lots of it. The 360 controller is ergonomically designed for comfort, with its two well-placed analog sticks, its multiple face and shoulder buttons and a decent d-pad. Best of all, we're mesmerized by the glowing X button.

"and a decent d-pad"

sempre adorei o controller do steel battalion.

Xbox 360 FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!And it win:009:

Enganei-me. Comando ultra confortavel e muito bom. Recomendo.
