[Wii] Table Tennis

IGN Hands-On

August 28, 2007 - When Rockstar's Table Tennis was unveiled for Xbox 360 last year, many wondered why it wasn't also announced for the Wii -- after all, its motion-sensitive controller appeared to be a perfect fit to mimic a ping pong paddle. Well, Rockstar just recently announced that a Wii version is indeed in the works, and we were able to give it a whirl on the show floor.

Interestingly, this version of Table Tennis actually has three different control options. The first is a simplified control scheme -- heavily inspired by Wii Sports Tennis -- in which only the Wii Remote is used to hit the ball. When using this scheme, the computer will control your player's physical position around the table, allowing to focus on serving and returning the ball. In addition, you can add spin by holding the control pad in the desired direction. The second control option uses the nun-chuck's control stick to precisely aim the ball, similar to the 360 version. The most advanced options provide you with full control of your player's exact position, allowing you to step back away from the table, if you wish.

After selecting my character, it was time to take on another show attendee, who apparently had played the game before. It was his serve, and with a flick of the wrist, the ball went sailing across the net and off my side of the table. Score: Opponent: 1, IGN 0. Okay, no big deal, perhaps my timing is off. After a few more missed serves, something seemed to be amiss. On the next serve, I tried swinging earlier - much earlier, and sure enough, my player hit the ball - finally! Unfortunately, there was a significant disconnect between your own movements and the game's response, which felt unnatural and lent the controls a very loose feeling.

Serving the ball felt very more natural, but wasn't completely intuitive. Unlike Wii Sports, where you simple flick the Wii Remote to toss the ball in the air, you first have hold the "A" button to assume the serving stance and make a power-meter appear. Now it's just a simple matter of flicking your wrist at the desired power level to serve the ball. It worked, but why couldn't the speed at which you swing the Wii Remote determine the power, instead of an artificial meter?

We only had about 10 minutes with the game total, so it's difficult to determine how well the controls will fare overcoming the steep learning curve. What we've seen so far technically works, but fails to offer an experience that truly capitalizes on the Wii's hardware. However, if Rockstar can iron out some of the kinks and offer a more streamlined interface, this very well might be a game worth keeping an eye on.

Update :D

O IGN parece gostar:

We now have the final version in-office, and after putting in a ton of volley time we've come to find that, while not perfect, Rockstar's latest - or should we say "first" now that Manhunt has been delayed - Wii effort is still a ton of fun to play.

And since the game doesn't have to worry about spin as well it's all the more accurate, allowing you to hit right and put left spin at the same time - a motion that isn't exactly easy to do for an amateur ping pong player - and we were surprised to see how fast we picked up the controls, and how lethal we were using them. I personally am a huge fan of the 360 game, and the Wii controls are more entertaining and immersive than the buttons were on 360. It's just fun to put the ball where you want. As a final note on control, there's also the "Control Freak" mode, which is exactly like the standard Wii-mote only control, adding the nunchuk specifically for character movement - something that's handled on the fly in the other two modes of play.

Bem, parece que tiraram o Online para se concentrarem em Controlos Avançados e parece que estes estão muito bons:
Wii Table Tennis drops online play

Monday 24-Sep-2007 5:37 PM To focus on "making it the most advanced control system on Wii", Rockstar tells CVG

The Wii version of Rockstar's Table Tennis will not include an online mode, Rockstar has just told us.

The online multiplayer mode featured in the 360 has been dropped on Wii because, as Rockstar explains: "All the focus is going into making it the most advanced control system on the Wii."

Granted, the control system is very good - you can read about that in our preview right now. But we can't help but feel it's completely unrelated to the omission of online play.

Surely a good control system AND an online mode in the same game isn't too much to ask.
