Posted on November 28th, 2006 by John Pospisil
Last week was very telling time for the video console industry in the US, with Nintendo making a concerted effort to make sure its new Wii video console made a big impact. And it did. But even as Nintendo congratulates itself on a job well done, Microsoft is already talking about price wars.
(...)
Robbie Back, Microsoft’s current President of Entertainment and Devices at Microsoft told the San Jose Mercury News, Microsoft is in a position to rmake life really difficult for Sony and Nintendo:
“Because we were out there first, we have a bigger installed base of consoles,” he said. ”We can drive down the manufacturing curve sooner and faster. And because we designed a box that was fundamentally easier to manage on costs, we’re going to have that advantage.”
Back also made the observation that what’s important over the life cycle of a console is “who has the cost advantage, who can price most effectively?”
So while it’s good news that Wii may have won an early battle (though MSN did issue a questionable report that Xbox was actually the biggest selling console this past Thanksgiving weekend), both Sony and Nintendo still have a long way to go, particularly with a competitor as big and as ugly as Microsoft.
Fonte: http://blogs.ign.com/Matt-IGN/2006/11/27/38501/5. Wii sales are off to an amazing start. Nintendo blasted through 600,000 units in a week and would have sold more if there were more units in store shelves. As it stands, every new allocation of units that hits retail promptly sells out. Obviously, Sony cannot hope to compete with these numbers because it simply cannot muster up enough PS3s to match Nintendo's supply. But even if it could, for the first time ever, I'm convinced that Wii would still outsell PS3. The momentum has shifted, at least for the time being -- and Wii is the hot item. Sony can't seem to buy good press and Nintendo can't shed it. Meanwhile, everybody who plays Wii loves it and I'm noticing that a wave is building. I stopped by a GameStop the other day to see if they had Wii component cables, which they didn't. I asked how Wii and PS3 were selling and the manager said, "Well, we're sold out of both, but nowadays we get 20 people calling about Wii for every single call we get about PS3." I remember when GameCube launched and I think I would have fallen over if any store manager said something like that back then.

PAL region to get units December 7th
Australian consumers have racked up over 30,000 pre-orders of the Nintendo Wii ahead of the console launch later this week.
"We expect demand will outweigh supply and that there will be a few more 'sickies' than usual on Thursday," said Nintendo of Australia spokesperson Vispi Bhopti, speaking to the Herald Sun.
The 30,000 figure is also the amount of Xbox 360's sold in the region in the first four days of launch, which made the Microsoft console the fastest-selling ever for the PAL territory.
Nintendo's new home console launches across Europe this Friday, December 8th.
Melhor? Pior?

New details have arrised on Gamecubes recent launch over here, and believe me, records have been broken.
We recently reported that 75,000 Gamecubes were sold in the UK in the first 2 days. This gives Gamecube the best-selling launch ever in the UK.
Though figures for Europe as a whole haven`t been announced, it is thought that nearly all of the 500,000 consoles allotted have been sold, which would make it the best-selling launch in Europe ever.

US, December 4, 2006
Sales totals for the first two days following the Wii's Japanese launch on 12/2 are in. Media Create, by way of Japanese gaming site Game Site EG, reports that the Wii sold 350,358 units over its first two days.
It shouldn't be much of a surprise given the focus of Nintendo's advertising campaign, but Wii Sports was the number one selling game over the two day period, coming in at 176,167 units. Number two was Hajimete no Wii, aka Wii Play. The simple game collection that comes bundled with a second Wiimote sold 175,297 units.
Are you shocked to find that Zelda wasn't the biggest Wii title in Japan? The long awaited revival of realistic Link placed third over the two day period, selling 139,011 units.
Here's how the other launch titles sold:
4. Wario: Smooth Moves (Nintendo, 63,954)
5. Super Swing Golf (Tecmo, 16,908)
6. Ennichi no Tatsujin (Bandai Namco, 10,763)
7. Red Steel (Ubisoft, 9,392)
8. SD Gundam Scad Hammers (Bandai Namco, 9,226)
9. Tamagotchi Pika Pikai Daitouryou (Bandai Namco, 8,042)
10. Elebits (Konami, 5,791)
11. Super Monkey Ball (Sega, 4,423)
12. Crayon Shin Chan (Banpresto, 4,248)
13. Trauma Center (Atlus, 4,107)
14. Kororinpa (Hudson, 2,416)
15. Necro-Nesia (Spike, 1,934)
16. Wing Island (Hudson, 800)
Wii software sold a total of 631,480 units, resulting in a hardware to software tie ratio of 1.80.
While the ratio is much higher than the below 1 ratio that the PS3 faced, Nintendo managed to account of most of the software sales. Heavily advertised titles like Tamagotchi, Elebits and Crayon Shin Chan did not manage to cross the 10,000 mark. For Bandai Namco, this could be a bit disappointing, considering that the first DS Tamagotchi game sold a million units.
Nintendo has promised to ship a million Wii systems to Japan by the end of the year. The Japanese market will also see some big first party titles in a couple of weeks, including Pokemon Battle Revolution. The system and the Nintendo software should sell well, but the big question is how third parties will fare on the typically first party friendly Nintendo hardware.
