id: Rage engine will 'power generations of consoles and platforms'
Speaking exclusively to CVG at last week's QuakeCon 2011, Willits said: "You can imagine that this technology will be the cornerstone for future generations of consoles and platforms.
"John Carmack feels that this technology is very forward scalable. He believes it will be with us for many years, it has a solid foundation, with the ability to stream every texture in the game right to the screen fast.
"You could even stretch your imagination farther and say that you could actually put all the assets of a game like Rage on a cloud somewhere and then pull them down," he added.
"The fact [is] that most of our assets sit in media and we pull them into the game. We could take that media and literally put it anywhere else. Yes we'd have to change the engine a little bit but it wouldn't be very difficult. So yeah, you can imagine the future and imagine that id Tech 5 will be right there."
So could id Tech 5 become the Unreal Engine 3 of its generation, powering a whole bunch of third party games? Not likely, as following its acquisition by Zenimax, id's new game engine will be exclusively reserved for Bethesda titles.
Still, that raises the mouth-watering prospect of the next Elder Scrolls game after the hugely anticipated Skyrim being powered by id tech 5. Quite a prospect indeed.
If you still haven't seen id Tech 5 in action, then we can thoroughly recommend the recent QuakeCon 2011 movie.
We also spent some recent hands-on time with the first few hours of Rage. Read about that in this extended preview, and keep an eye out for the full interview with Tim Willits, which will be appearing on CVG later this week.
